When you dim your house lights do you use less electricity? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | no, the lower wattage used by the light is used by the dimmer [as waste heat] - need to use lower wattage bulbs to save power, which automotively speaking happens by having 2 elements in the headlights, one high wattage, one low wattage Bill | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | Thank you Bill, I might have guessed you would have the answer.

Most dimmers are rheostat dimmers. Thyristor dimmer do not "dump" the unused electricity. Supposedly Lutron sells some energy savings dimmers. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | I think you will find most dimmers today have electronic choppers in them and thus use less electricity. I believe the electronics is now cheaper to make. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 1,756 | | | |
