Looking for a starter solenoid that mounts on the firewall and energizes the solenoid on the starter motor
on this truck
http://www.t137.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10010/Ed_s_GMC_side.jpg

1951 GMC 650 diesel 4-71engine.
Any help locating one or a part number would be Greatly appreciated.
There's no numbers on the old one and can't seem to match it in Napa or Car Quest books.

Thanks,
TGP

I don't have the solenoid you're looking for, but would like to compliment you on your Wrecker. Was it recently on Craigslist. Looks to have a nice Holmes W35 Wrecker on the back of it. I hate it when the service body sides have been cut down like that. That was commomly done for easier access to the back of the body. I looked for years for one that had not been done this way. You can see mine in my webshots albums, in the links below. Looks to have a '54 cab, with the one piece windshield.

Sounds like a normal off the shelf part from NAPA, or any big truck parts place.

Unless you need one exactly as original, in which case we'd need a picture, and still they may have one at the regular parts places.

It will be hard to tell what was original. Parts have been superseded and 2010 class 8 trucks still use a solenoid on the firewall. It may have had the solenoid added later because don't see it listed in the parts book.

Hy TGP, how many batteries does your truck have? The device you seak may be a series/paralell switch, these were used when an engines starter was 12 volt, but the trucks electrical system was 6 volt, the switches were also used later on 12/24 volt systems, hope that helps.

A starter solenoid solenoid on a Diesel is common, and from the first description sounds like what he's after, a typical Ford starter solenoid (among others) will work for this application.

Any John Deere dealer will have a starter relay. Ask for a starter relay for a 4440.

Thanks for the complement.
I know what your saying about the bed sides.
Having grew up in my fathers towing/garage business in the fifties and sixties I watched him build his own smaller bodies for the one ton trucks and modify the larger Holmes' bodies to suit him.
It obviously worked for him as my younger brother who actually owns this truck is still operating the towing business today 1947-2010.

Thanks for the reply.
I am very aware of a series parallel switch. That is not what I'm looking for.
Right now it has one 4D battery. not sure what was original, probably two six volts.
Thanks

He could rewire a ford or barrel type solenoid in it's place but he wants to try and find the original if possible.
I know this could be a daunting task. I I'm currently searching E Bay with some being close , no luck yet.
It's kind'a like the old horn relay, but different and a little heavier.

And Here

The top wire is the signal wire, the bottom end wire is Battery feed, the top end wire goes to the starter solenoid.
Thanks

Spanky,
Forgot to add that I'm not aware of it being on Craig list, but could have.
It was at a local competor's business here until he sold out.
As I understand the truck was bought wrecked (broken frame) by the towing company in the late fifties, and rebuilt as a wrecker.
That would probably explain the later cab.

TGP,

And if mone of that works out, try calling some friends of Grigg's and mine in PA (Leid Diesel Service) 717-776-7725 Ask for Timothy, but any of them should be able to help you. Explain what you're after and they might have it in stock to ship out that day or next via UPS.

They are gurus of the 71 series Detroits. Billy Marlow and I had our 6-71's worked on while we waited last Friday.

smile

And yeah, that *is* a beautiful truck! Would you happen to have a nice hi-resolution digital picture of it we could use in the Big Bolt calendar for next year?? Email me at editor@stovebolt.com

Good luck,
John

Thanks John!
I ordered the solenoid from Buick Farm with the part number provided by 3B.
They showed a picture and it's very close to the one mounted on the truck, weather it's original or some aftermarket from day's gone by.
Thanks for the GM 71 info. I will remember that.

I will try and get a picture for the calendar for you as soon as possible.
When is the cut off date?

That's a beautiful 59 850 GMC your friend has, by the way!!!

I was close to buying this truck. I saw it on Craigslist and talked with the owner. Went on vacation, got put on back burner. Emailed him a month or so later and told me they it just sold.

The pictures I got though were with it shoved back in the garage with stuff all around it. Was tough to get a clear "shot" of what it really looked like.

I'm in Jacksonville -- up North on 67 from you guys -- I've seen your stuff before -- very, very sharp. Glad to know this one went to a GREAT home.
