Just got a 62 gmc fleetside shortbed with a 305 v6 and 3 speed manual..there any way that the stock drivetrain hooks up to a chevy 350? if not what all would i need to change for the conversion besides all the motor related mounts?

The 3-speed manual tranny bellhousing will bolt to a 350 sbc, however the frame-to-motor engine perches are different on the GMC 305 V6, than the sbc and the '60-'62 engine mounts are different than the '63-'66 engine mounts.

ahh ok thanks, i know the gmc mounts are welded on and will need to be grinded off to be switched unlike the chevy ones that are bolted on anyway. The gmc has a 283 v8 option do you think those engine mounts would work since the 283 and 350 are the same block?

The '60-'66 GMC trucks were available with a 230 or 250 straight six or a 305 V8...I am not aware of a 283 sbc being availble in a GMC truck in '60-'66.

Near the top of the following thread there’s a link to Persh.org which shows the different types of towers/mounts that can be used in these trucks. The main thread shows how I used 67-72 style mounts on my 1960 GMC. You wouldn’t need to do the rear crossmember change if you’re keeping the original type bellhousing with the side mounts.

Yea i have seen that thread a few times, LMC truck has engine mounts for a 283 4.6L v8 option for the 62' gmc model listed in their catalog, i figured since a 350 is the same block as the 283 i could order a set of those after i get my stock tranny beefed up to handle the 350. Think the rear end will hold up to the power or might i need to switch that out? and do you think the lmc 283 mounts would work since they are factory replacement?

just finished doing the same thing. the motor perches off a truck don't have to be gmc. i used the perches off 65chevy 283. if you want new ones try summitt racing.

Thanks for the input, know which mounts to use now. There an easy way to deal with the spacers for perches as far as machining them? Or would the 65 perches bolt in? Not sure with the year difference but a second opinion never hurts right?

I am using the engine brackets from a 91 suburban donor vehicle along with the same year rubber isolated motor mounts. will let you know when I finish how they line up. Kieth

I never did a V-6 to V-8 swap, but I believe I have heard many times that the V-6 Bell Housing is different???

Yea i heard the older ones are different but my model being a 62 I've also heard the contrary..its the 3 speed stick on the floor which is a T-85 i think? If it is i'm almpst positive my 350 crate will bolt in after a rebuild. Now thinking harder before ordering parts were any of the 305 V6's available with posi-type rear ends?

Right, '62 and back on Chevy I-6's are different, in cars anyway. I believe trucks follow the same pattern. But, as mentioned above, I have heard that the V-6 Bell is different than a V-8 Bell. The V-6 was out in 1960 and went to '68 or '69 in Pick-ups, even later in larger trucks. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The V6 & V8 BELL HOUSEINGS ARE DIFFERENT.YOU WILL NEED TO GET A BELL FROM A CHEVY PU UP TO YEAR 67 OR MAYBE 68. YOUR TRASMISSION WILL BOLT UP NO PROBLEM.YOU WILL ALSO NEED A STARTER AS THEY ARE NOT THE SAME, ALSO CLUTCH & FLY WHEEL.YOU WILL NEED MOTOR PERCHES FOR A V8 ALTHO I WAS TOLD THAT I6 'S WILL WORK JUST TAKE THE TOP PART OFF[ 292 PERCHES WON'T WORK],THIS I CANN'T SWEAR TO AS I DIDN'T TRY IT.I ALSO HAD TO MAKE A BRACKET FOR THE CLUTCH SWING ARM BALL TO MOUNT TO, BUT YOU COULD ALSO MOVE THE OTHER BRACKET ON THE FRAME JUST AS EASY.

i used the 6 clyinder bellhousing, worked perfect. just buy v8 motor mounts. the perches that hold the motor supports will have to be changed. of course you will need v8 starter. the v8 bellhousing and 6 clyinder housing bolts up the same. i checked with machine shop and the guy told me to use 6 clyinder flywell which i did. works great for me. 256-856-2115 richard.hope this helps.

One thing i almost forgot about since i'm about to take the tranny to a local race shop..it has a Fluid Clutch. Do i need to replace that? Cause i don't know the first thing about them or what they can handle. Suggestions?

i cannot answer that, my truck does not have fluid clutch. as far as the clutch ball. you will need clutch arm off sbc as it will reach ball. the perches unbolted off my truck and the v8 perches bolte in the same holes. i hopr this helped, the guys on here help me when i was doing mine. great bunch of people.
