I Really enjoy this sight. I have gotten tons of usefull information from here. You guys are great.
But anywho, the front spindle threads on my 53 3100 are sort of buggered up. Does anyone know what die I need to clean them up. I'm thinking 3/4x20 but not for sure. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Melvin

I was going to do that if I can't get the right die....Would really rather run a die over the threads, but will use a thread file as a last resort.

Thanks, Mel

As a diesel fitter in the shipyard, we always used a thread guage to determing the threads per inch. Of course you could use your eye and measuring device to count them. In a pinch I've used a small 3 sided file to clean up threads. You can use something like prussion blue on the nut threads to see where its binding on the spindle threads and then work on that area.

Thanks for your input guys. I did find the right die to chase the threads. The problem seems to be that there will only be about three "good" threads holding the nut when I get the bearings adjusted correctly. I plan on getting two new nuts, set the bearings like the book says, and hope for the best. I think someone in Ole Punkin's past didn't have the bearings set right and it wore on the threads.
Thanks Again, Mel

I had excessive wear in the spindle surface where the inner bearing rides. I was willing to purchase new ones which I couldn't find. Used ones were just as bad or worse. I found a company that did hard chroming and they built up the surface and with the new bearings they machined them to fit properly. This process might due well for the threads as well. It could be something to research.

Was thinking something along those same lines as well. If running a die over the threads & new nuts don't work I'll have to back up and punt. I would think a machine shop could do that.
Thanks, Mel
