The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop SM420 transmission mount

I swapped the 3 speed on the column out to the floor shifted SM420 4 speed tranmission, everything bolted right back into place just like the 3 speed was, including the mount at the torque tube ball (rear transmission mount).

Now i'm working on changing the old enclosed driveshaft & rearend out to a open driveshaft & newer rearend (better gear ratio), my question is this, on our trucks, that had the open driveshafts & 4 speed (SM420) is there a rear transmission mount? By looking in the manual that I got from Chevrolet, there appears to be either a 4 point mount (motor & transmission), or a 3 point mount (motor only). So is it safe to think that the 4 speed did not have a rear mount.

for most trucks that have the 4spd tranny and aren't 4x4 it pretty much just has 2 engine mounts (one on each side) and another 2 mounts on the bellhousing for the tranny and no mounts for the rear/tailshaft my 55 2nd series, 70 chevys are this way also my 64 chevy with 3spd was the same

No rear mount on mine. I installed an O.D. a few months back and concerned about the extra weight, I added a new crossmember mount to the adapter between the transmissions.

My 51 1 Ton has one front engine mount and two side mounts on the nell housing. It has the 4 speed and the open driveshaft.
