I installed a "new" temp gauge..rebuilt stock unit from one of the parts suppliers.. I ran the truck up to operating temp, first run with new radiator, hoses, etc...problem is, the temp gauge never came off cold. The rad was warm..thermostat is opening, closing. Yes..it is cold here now..but it should have registered something...
Anything special you have to do to get a temp gauge to work? The old one worked fine until I broke the face.
No tape or anything used at the block, so nothing should be interfering with temp transfer... | | |

first thing to do is use yer wifes candy thermometer in the rad and see if "warm" is above 120 or so - if not, might be the thermostat is opening too soon?
got a hot plate or electric kettle?
take it out to the truck, put the sender in it, boil some water
gauge still don't move, send it back

I am suspecting that the thing is junk and will have to go back.
The engine was at operating temp as the coolant circulating was almost too hot to touch. Rad was also toasty warm but not boiling over.

#68845 11/19/2006 8:06 PM | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2005 Posts: 1,624 | Mechanical senors like your temperature gauge are a a sealed pressure bulb (the sensor) hooked by a small tube to a Bourdon tube (the gauge). As heat builds up in the sensor the pressure goes up. This is transferred to the tube, which is somewhat "C" shaped, making the tube uncoil. The neddle is hooked to the coil and as the tube moves so does the needle. I'd send it back.
