I searched and found out some information about the different folks that rebuilt them. The tag you are referring to lists the specifications of the engine after it was assembled. The first spec. is the bore oversize. [+.o40] The second spec. is the main undersize. [-.020] The third spec. is the rods undersize. [-.???] See, not too hard to understand. All rebuilt engines need to be taged this way. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,554 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,554 | This emgime has some of the things I need for mine, like the manifold and possibly the carb, when I check it out closer, if I can get it running I may go with it instead of the one I have, time will tell. Sears also sold them at that time. I was just a kid and after installing it and starting it up, found that it had a cracked block!! What a let down. I had to pull it out and deliver it back to Wards for inspection before they would ship out another one. The second engine worked fine, but all of that down time sure cut into my dating schedule.

Characteristically, those engines were the ones that needed big overbores, and lots of crankshaft grinding. It wouldn't be uncommon to find .060" oversize cylinders and a .030/.030 undersize crankshaft in a Sears or a Ward's engine. A lot of the time, they were sold as a "short block", a rebuilt lower end without a cylinder head. A customer would get a machine shop to do a valve job, and re-use his old cylinder head. His worn-out block got turned in as a "rebuildable core", so if it had major damage, there was an extra charge involved. Usually, the engines were supplied by high-volume rebuilders, and the specification tag would be applied showing the name of whatever big-box retailer was selling that particular engine. All the building was done on a "low-bid" procedure, so nobody really knew who was supplying the engines. I've seen Dad refer lots of people to the Sears store right down the street when they balked at the price of his rebuild estimate. Jerry

I might get it just for the manifold, then I'll see what everything else looks like. I think he's needing a later-model engine anyway. Is yours a car or truck engine? I'm looking for a 1950 model car 235 with hydraulic lifters, or at least a block to build up. It would need to be one with the sidesaddle motor mounts, and an oil gallery drilled to supply hydraulics. Jerry

I'd love to have a good running 235 but the shipping would kill me. I do also want the more modern engine.
