The shaft that extends inward is 3 1/2" long. First the clutch linkage is about 1 3/16" wide. Then there is the brake linkage which is about 3" wide. With both installed the brake linkage is short about 3/4". There doesn't seem to be any way to secure the end of the shaft with the two linkages on it. Is this normal? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 649 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 649 | Did you take it apart? Did it fit before? Is it possible you have the wrong clutch/brake levers? I've got a 54 I can look at, but it will have to wait till daylight to check it out. I'll get back to you in the AM. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 58 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 58 | Yakimabowtie, My truck was in pieces when I bought it. I don't remember much about the configuration of where the clutch arm and brake attached to the 3 1/2 " shaft. I do know this, if I just put the brake arm on the shaft then one of those "C" locking clips would secure it nicely. It's as if the 3 1/2" shaft only accommodates a brake and the truck did not have a clutch arm attached. The problem is with only the brake arm installed the pedal going through the floor would have to be redrilled to the right. Also, with the new power brake booster I'm installing the part that pushes the plunger needs to be about 7 1/4" off of the frame. Here is the thing I'm thinking - did Chev make a shaft 3 1/2" long for trucks that had auto trans which would explain why only the brake pedal fits correctly (clutch arm wouldn't be needed), and maybe they made another shaft about 4 1/2" long when there was a clutch arm attached as well as a brake arm? As I said before, the clutch arm is 1 3/16" wide and the brake arm is 3" wide. With the clutch and brake arm on the shaft it equals 4 3/16" but the shaft I have is only 3 1/2". | | | | | Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 58 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2009 Posts: 58 | Here is a link to some pictures of the problem I'm having. Truly, a picture is worth a thousand words. Can you help me? Go to: http://ilovealamos.com/TEMP/brakeproblem.htmThanks for your help. I did measure, and the clutch lever is 1 1/4" and the brake is 1 3/4" wide. The shaft is 3 1/2". So if you have a brake lever 3" wide I would assume your truck originally had an automatic in it? I'll bet the odds are 95 out of 100 trucks came with standard transmissions! I think the plunger alignment has been a common problem, do a search and you'll come up with a fix. Goodluck. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 82 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2005 Posts: 82 | I do think your shaft is too short. I have the same booster set up in my AD with a 4 spd. I'll mesure it & post tomorrow.

With your brake booster, and having the clutch and brake arms taking up 3" on the pedal shaft, does the rod going back to the booster go on an angle rather than straight back? I think I need to go to the junk yard and get what you have. The rod going back would be about 5" from the frame in the front and about 7" from the frame where it goes into the booster.

It's 6 1/2" from the outside of the fraim rail, thru the mounting bracket to the end with the c clip. It's 3 1/4" from the bracket to the c clip. It does sound like some one modified your brake pedal pivot, so you may need to find an origanal set of pedals, I got a replacement set from a guy in Renton. His email was [email protected]. I don't know if he's still around. You also might try Allamerican Clsaaics in Vancouver WA I've got the CCP booster kit & with the intermediate pivot point on the brake linkage, plus the overall design my m/c is now under the seat. I'm not really impressed with the kit & may try to design something else. Good luck & keep us posted.

The front of the rod that goes to the booster is about 7" from the outside frame at the point it attaches to the brake arm and also about 7" from the frame where it goes into the booster. Can you tell me, since you have a CPP unit also, is the rod about 6" from the frame in front? Does it slant back going into the booster? Like 5" or 6" in front from the frame? 7" from the frame in back? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 130 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 130 | hello 54 dd, just checked out the brake and clutch bellcrank on my 55 first series. i think it should be the same as your 54. my brake bell crank does not look like the one in your pictures. mine has the large diameter end of the bellcrank facing inboard to accomodate the clip on the end of the shaft. the tab that the brake push rod attaches to on mine is nearly perpendicular to the bellcrank arm that attaches to the brake pedal arched rod. that tab is also much shorter than the one in your pictures, less than 2 in. in length. and finally ,the pivot shaft on mine is about 3 1/2 in. long. my guess would be that the bellcrank you have is the wrong one. hpe this helps garyg.

Some one hacked up your pedal, The arm that conects to the brake booster rod should be dircetly below the arm that hooks to the pedal ( on the same plane ) Some one moved the short part inboard. Just get another brake pedal arm assembly. Problem solved.
