Hi everyone,

Truck is a 51 3100. A PO swapped the rear end at some point and it now has an open drive shaft. I have looked all over the rear end for numbers to id it and can't find anything. It has a 10 bolt cover is a 6 lug. The only noticeable feature I have seen are 3 fins or ridges on the driver side of the housing facing the front of the truck. Below are the links to some pictures that I took. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hy kenneycj, it looks like a 55B - 59 Chev 1/2 ton rear axle to me, hope that helps.

'55-'62. There should be a number stamped on the passenger side of the 3rd memeber. That will be the code for year/ratio. Here's a picture showing where the number should be. If you can get the code, I can decipher it for you.

Ok I found the code--looks like NK 10 20. Any help in decoding it or a link to somewhere I can decode it.

I'm coming up with a '55 1rst series with a 3.90 gear. The K part of the code doesn't seem to be listed, but all of the N codes come up as '55 1rst.
