I have evidence of fluid through both wheel seals and the pinion seal... after reading some posts on here (and thank God I did) I decided to look for this vent, which I had previously not encountered.

If this indeed is the vent, is there something missing?? Just a hole on the top of the shaft? Surly there must be some protection from elements that I don't have.

yep, something missing .... the vent big_eek should be a small 'tube' in that hole with a cap on it that fits loosely, held on by a crimp - lets air out without letting road junk in

Hy Bigtonka, that picture is of a hole, where the vent should be. If you know what size the hole is [1/8" or 1/4" pipe thread] you can probably get one at your local Napa, hope that helps.

Thanks guys!

I couldn't tell - or perhaps I didn't look hard enough, but is it that hole threaded? It looks like 1/4" for sure.

If it is threaded and you need to clean up the threads with a thread chaser or tap here's a good tip. Put some grease on your thread chaser. Any loose stuff or metal chips will stick to the tap and not fall inside.
Go to your local NAPA. Tell them you need a vent for your rearend. They have some awesome catalogues to look through.
That'll give you some options.

To change the subject, the vent on my 1 Ton has a little tube with a one way flap inside. I removed it and tested it. It lets air out but not in.
