I know it's a later model GM product but I want to make it easier to buy the parts I need. It's a 10 bolt, enclosed driveshaft unit with Bendix brakes. I'm pretty sure it's early 50's vintage.
There are two elongated indentations on either side of the front of the axle shaft about 12" in from the backing plates. Does anyone know what these are for?
Can anyone tell me whether this rear end will mount right up to my truck and work properly? When I bought the truck, the PO had disconnected the lever action shocks and tried to mount gas shocks to it. It was cobbled up a bit. I just need to know how to mount this thing up, since I don't have the original rear end. It's all I've got to work with at this point.
I know this is a lot of information and I really appreciate anyone's input.

Oregon to Kansas would be a heck of a drive. It'd probably cost a ton to ship it. I don't know if it would be a direct bolt up or not. If you're interested let me know. I just want to get it out of the way.

I know S. F. is a bit of a drive too, but I will be getting rid of my 1940 3/4 ton gmc rear soon. I believe this to have the 4.56 ratio, but have not confirmed. It is 6 lug, just like the 1/2 tons. | | |

I'm not sure when I'll be back down there but I do get down that way fairly regularly. Is it something you can hang onto for a bit or do you want to get rid of it asap? We're actually moving back down there mid next year. I don't expect you to hang onto it that long, but I'd like to get together and compare notes. Let me know.

I am waiting for some critical components and looking for a suitable location to do my work. I will not be able to hold onto the spares for long, but do want to find the spares a good home. I have both a 3 speed and 4 speed transmission. I can take any necessary measurement.
