Does anyone know of a source for brake hoses for a 1954 Two-ton truck?

The local parts houses all stated that their books say that they are no longer available.

I've looked online but no luck there either. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place?

I looked into having some made, but the hydraulic hose shop wouldn't do it because of "liability". I can't see much difference in liability between a brake hose and a hydraulic hose. If either goes, it could be a catastrophy.

Thanks for any help

I got my front shoes for my 46 COE 2ton from Obsolete chevy. They weren't in the book but they have alot of military surplus stuff. These brake shoes were galvinized and also riveted which I wanted. Ask for Mike,he knows more what they have than any one else. (1-800-248-8785

I got some from Carquest for a 2 ton GMC. Their computer only goes back to 1962, but they are still in the printed books and still in their warehouses. You just need to find someone who isn't totally reliant on a computer.

Hy MT53, my parts book says all three are the same Raybestos p/n BH4497, o.a.l. 16 7/8" 7/16" X 20 t.p.i. male thread on one end, 7/16" X 24 t.p.i. female thread on the other end, this end also has a retaining clip slot in it, hope that helps.

The brake hose vs hyd hose liability thing is a common issue. What I came across more often was welding places that will make you a trailer, but wont make a roll cage because of liability issues. You would think a trailer coming apart on the road would be a bad thing, but evidently a failed roll cage is a bigger issue. It's all about that rediculous ripoff scam we call "insurance".

As far as those parts go, they dont make the hoses or front wheel cyclenders for my '56 either. But, the hoses from a later model are available & were only a few inches longer. 7/8" bore wheel cylenders were available from a '61, just had an angled fitting boss, but otherwise identical.
Really, if you can find a local Napa shop with someone that knows how to use thier books, you'll be able to find something that works. May not be the same year, or exactly like original, but the parts are out there.

I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things.
But thats just MY opinion!

Geoff is a brake encyclopedia, he called out part numbers for the wheel cylinders on my '52 GMC 450 from memory. I caught him out of the shop when I first called, simply amazing!

I just got 2 ton brake hoses from NAPA last week. Ask for part# 36696. If they are out of stock, you can use part# 36540 (they are longer, but have the proper fittings).

Good luck, George
