What year?

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Hello,
My Apache is 1961, it has the torsion bar suspension and the hydraulic clutch.

Any advice would be greatfully received,

Laine

If it is anything like the 66 it should bolt right in there..In some applications you may have to move the mount up or back to the next hole in the frame . If you are adding an automatic cut the old trans mount off [ at the rivets ] and move back .

The 60-62 chevy trucks used a "U" shape front motor mount in most cases for the V-8 trucks and a V-8 bellhousing for the hyd clutch. they did use side mounts too. email me at:
[email protected] and i can send you pictures of the parts you need to install a V-8 in your 60-62 truck. i just did one on a 62. hope this helps.

Hey RJ. I need some information on doing the V8 conversion on a '61 Chevy C10, as well. Can you provide this information to me?

My 63 C10 already had a 350 in it when I got it, but it was torn down. When I put a new motor in it the distributor was very close, to the firewall. It has an HEI in it and the #5 or #6 plug wire boot touches the firewall. Dont remember which one it is been deployed for a while. I use it as a daily driver and have had no issues with it, once I get to that part of the restoration I will address the issue. Im sure if you run points or external coil there is plenty of clearance. You wont regret putting a 350 in it. I have alot of fun with my V8. Also make sure if you go HEI that your engine mounts are very good, dont want anyone to loose a distributor over a bad engine mount.

Tony, you will need the 60-62 V-8 front motor mount and a 60-62 V-8 bellhousing (for hyd clutch) to do the conversion, you will use the holes on the cross member to mount the front mount the bracket that is riveted to the crossmember may have to be removed if the balancer is in the way. hope this helps.

Here's a thread I did a while ago about swapping in a V8 in my 1960 GMC, most of which applies to the 60-62 Chevy as well:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=369663

If you're going to retain the stick shift the original style V8 engine and bellhousing mounts will work, but if you want an automatic side mounts are needed and a tail mount transmission crossmember. Factory automatic crossmembers are very rare, but do come up on eBay every now and then. Fabricating a new one should be relatively easy once you know how they were originally installed. The first link inside the thread shows the various engine mounting brackets that can be used. For throttle linkage the six cylinder firewall pivot works fine, but the arm for the V8 is either longer or shorter (I can't remember which).

Should power brakes be desirable while retaining the stick shift, there is now a high quality and well engineered bracket available:

http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=362375

I originally bought the Master Power Brake arrangement and found it deficient so I designed my own, long before the above bracket was on the market.

On a somewhat related subject, here's a thread about swapping in the later coil spring suspension in this series of truck should there be any interest:
