Took the truck and the Bomber to the Greenbank car show yesterday. POut them in the under construction class and won 1st for the Bomber, and 2nd for the dump.
Crazy stuff,...

There were a couple other big bolts out there too, I'll post some links when I can quit bein sick long enuf to upload them.

OK, so it'sbeen a couple of weeks since the show. I've been a bit burned out on the internet, I spend too much time trying to find jobs that dont exist.
Anyway, nice slow holiday weekend, now I have the time!

SO! Here's a shot of 'Tater and the Bomber at the car show. 2nd & 1st place under construction respectively.
An early 50's GMC 250 that was at the show, a few modifications here and there. Along with another 250, but more stock than the previous.

Getting the parts together so I can put on the new manifolds and finally fix the vac leaks in the intake. Hope to be able to drive without earplugs in short order.

The newest news tho, I took the beast off the island t'other day for a shakedown cruise as it were. 74 mile round trip to the hot rod dealership (so they could drool over the beast while I drooled over cars I cant afford) & goto lunch w. our rooom mate.
Tater ate it up, no problems at all. LOUD, but ran well the whole trip.

Best part, and a big reason for the trip, I found out what my avg. MPG on the highway was so I can make accurate estimation of fuel cost when I do business driving. I was expecting 5-7 MPG rolling at full speed (55ish), but actualy got just under 10!
Will be making another run when I get the manifolds back together & tune it up. I'm hoping that number improves a bit once I get the manifolds on, and still lookin at putting a vac-advance kit on the dizzy. If I can eke out another MPG or two out of her I'll be stoked.

Wow that is some grate mileage, now put a load on it and do it again.

Been sufferin a bit of an internet burnout, spendin too much time online doin job search stuff and fighting with the state about my UI bennefits, just dont feel like reading much.

ANYway, I have been workin on the beast. The vac line for the HydroVac finaly gave out so I had to get one made. Of course the antique fittings dont exist anymore, so I had to get a whole new set of fittings and all. New line is a fabric covered, and blue like the engine!
Pulled the manifolds off to install the new ones. Old exhaust manifold was massively cracked and leaking like crazy. Explains why it was getting louder and louder! So, to prevent the recurrence of that issue, when I went to reinstall the pipe I cut out a chunk under the cab and installed a 10" flex joint. Just need to add a hanger on the back piece to take more of the weight load off the manifold and it should work good for many years. The neat part was firing it up and hearing just how quiet the truck can be, the drivetrain makes more noise than the exhaust now.
I also added a case ventilation system since I had the fitting for it on the valve cover. Better than having it spit oil all over the engine compartment anymore.

Should be takin the truck for another mileage check Friday, and droppin by a local area cruise in while I'm at it.

A shot of theflex joint and fwd pipe hangar. The strap clamps are MUCH nicer than U-bolt clamps, best part being you can seperate the parts easily when needed. It's angled back like that as the rear hangars are angled the other way, helps take longitudinal load off the pipe.

Here's a shot of the side of the truck with the advert I painted on the bed, you can also see my home made shovel bracket. And under the bed is the ammo-can/toolbox, it's welded onto a support frame and hinged at the bottom so it swings out from the frame for easier access to the contents.

Friday cruise in is cancelled due to going to an employment conference (gotta get a dang job!). Wanted to make that, but we are thinkin we'll go by the LaConnor car show Saturday instead.

OK, 1st off, I is alive and well, and so is Tater.
For those that recall, we did end up movin back to Washington state. I've been working out a means to get a trailer I can haul with the dump, and now I'm lookin around or a tractor/loader to put on the trailer, and we'll be in business! Starting to advertise and see what I can make happen as far as gettin some work here & there haulin what ever where ever.
Still trying to sell the CA house, livin on a fixed income, but things areevning out s I can start pokin around here again. I have a couple months of reading to do, and life is still pretty crazy, so my participation could be spotty.

My life has been crazy as well but glad to see you are still around. Good luck with your business venture I would suggest if you are going to own one machine a little backhoe or excavator would be most versatile. I would look for something like a 580 case or 310 JD for a backhoe or a mini excavator in the 8,000 to 12,000 pound range with a thumb and blade. I bought a three axle 21,000 pound trailer brand new for 5,000 out the door it is like an over grown car trailer with fenders, a very nice trailer but if I had it to do again I would spend a little more and get a dueled up two axle 12 ton deck over.

OK, we are still here and in one piece. Been spending most of the time I am online lookin for work so I'd suffer internet burnout and never even get around to looking at the Bolt, nevermind posting. Kinda sucks as now I have months of posts to sift through for nice tidbits, see who's out there since I've been out fartin around!

It's been over 6 mos, but I have a job now, start next week. Gonna be workin as a Janitor on the Navy base near the house. Not the best pay, but I wont be blowing the difference in gas like with the other options I was lookin at.

As far as Tater goes, and the hauling business, it's been dead. Had a few calls from locals, but even tho I charge next to nothing they never seem to want to part with the money & never call back. I did nail down a trailer, a nice 6x16 dovetail with a drop gate, side rails, and a tool rack, made for hauling gear for lawn care really, but I can fit a decent sized tractor on it. Been lookin at a New Holland 4WD with a quick change bucket and a ripper with grapple for clearing and loading brush/branches. Just have to offload the house in CA and unscrew my credit,…
I did finally get a solid bite this last weekend, job was 40 miles away and involved moving a large pile of dirt a mere 4 mile round trip. I figured 10-15 loads (I was WAY off!). However,... 1 mile of the trip was a gravel/dirt driveway that averaged 30 degree incline, and was steeper than that in a couple places. So yesterday I get up early and head to the site to start haulin at 8am. They had someone at the pickup site with a Cat 622 excavator that loaded me in 3-3/4 scoops, so loading was fast. Longest part of the job was that durned hill! I took the 1st trip slowly and figured out all I could manage was 2-Low for most of the drive, with a couple stints in 2-Hi if I didn't miss a shift. I am glad I never got the bug to get a bigger engine, I think I’d have blown the gearbox or snapped an axle on this one.
I kept the box topped off until we got some drizzle and I started tearing up the driveway and slipping a bit, leaving off that last 3/4 scoop of dirt for 3 trips took care of that till it dried up a bit. All in all I made 22 trips up that hill with a heaped 5-yard box. THAT was a serious amount of dirt!
Was a very long day for me, My leg was killin me from messin with the brake and throttle all the time, thankfully the clutch on Tater is smooth as butter tho. I made a couple hundred bucks off the deal, but after the fact I realized I should have added a fuel charge because I burned a LOT of gas goin up that hill 3 times an hour. Ah well, live & learn, have ta remember to factor that in when hauling uphill.

Now I need to get the truck into the shop and pull the right rear spring off and have the pins and U-bolts redone, it was flexing enough that the springs started to rotate out of the stack. cant have that, not when I’m hauling max capacity up 30+ degree inclines on a hillside! Also need to adjust the brakes and eyeball the pads, might be time to reline the shoes. The bummer is I made less than half what the spring will cost, and I have no idea what the shoes are gonna run,… Fun times!

I'll have to get a photo up, but one item I did change on the truck was the tail lights. The stock lights were just too dim, the running lights between them were brighter than the brake lights, and I always have my lights on when I drive. Potential for an issue there.
So, I went and bought some new LED tail lights and beehive running lights from the truck shop and made a mounting panel for them out of a sheet of galanized steel. Not the best work I've done, but they work great and I wont have to worry soo much about some doofus nailing me because they didn't see my lights.
Just have to clean up the original light housings and put em up on Ebay.

I also got off my hiney and painted the Old 'N Slo logo on the doors and tailgate. Made a couple stencils to lay it out and then hand painted the whole deal. Looks pretty slick too. Interestingly enough I've been getting more calls since then.

That hauling job looked like a nice little job for you. I would suggest a Construction Master calculator by Calculated Industries for bidding such work. I keep a 300 foot tape and Construction Master Pro with me at all times as the bid will make or break you. I would also get to know all the dump sites and gravel pits in your area get price sheets put them in a binder and keep them updated this is most important to your bidding process. It would also help to lean who else there is in the area doing the same kind of work, make friends and learn who you can trust this way you can team up on some bigger jobs. Also in that binder have all the rental outfits and prices for their equipment rental rates.

I do have a fair idea what the local dump rates are and the average cost of gravel, but a solid list from the places within my operating range is a better idea for sure. So far this is still a part time gig, but once I have a loader, if things go well I may look for a bigger bolt to add to the fleet, maybe something like Big Ugly.
Speakin of, how is that new fuel tank workin out? I was thinkin of adding a saddle tank to 'Tater.

Well now, as it turns out, things are goin South faster & further. Thanks to my bank being a turd and losing me a buyer, and the recent chages in how credit is calculated I currently dont have th credit to finance a skate board, nevermind a tractor. Alho we had a new buyer on the hook the same day, the bank sent te house to forclosure in that small gap. Fun times,...

I did find one of those nifty Construction Master Pro 5 calculators. That is ALL kinds of cool there, esp. when ya take into account that I SUCK at math. These things are super simple and can factor in cost per unit as well. Man, what a life saver (thanks again for the idea Grant!).
Still suckin hind side for business, I'm trying to scrape the $$ together to get an ad in the local paper since all I get from craigslist are jergoffs on gmail accounts sendin me garbage mail,... Ugh!

As far 'Tater, she's runnin like a top. Put her in the local car show a couple weeks back, and as usual she turned a lot of heads. I take the big beast to work a couple times a week as a rolling billboard ad, also to keep it runnin smooth, and to keep the locals & our landlord from pitchin a fit. A good idea since in this state a vehicle can be towed if it sits in one place, even legaly parked, for 24 hours, and then can be sold at auction if not paid for & recovered by th owner w/i 14 days. I wouldn't put it past my "richard" of a landlord to call on it either.
I'm still looking around for a snow plow I can mount on it, but I'll need to have the front springs redone at the very least before that becomes a reality.

Tater is down with a case of charging system crud. Regulator cutout relay froze, ran down the battery, and seems to have fried the armature on my jenny. Taking it in for a test tomorrow along with a core I got in the mail today that I'm gonna have rebuilt so I have a spare on the shelf.
And or course, today after I yanked the jenny I got a call fo a job,... Typical! (this is why I need a spare) Just had to suck it up, use my lil truck and the trailer and deal with offloading by hand. Measly 950lbs of trash and construction debris, t'weren't nuthin!

FYI, we sold the house, only took 8-1/2 months! Now we are trying to recover our devestated finances & credit rating. joy!

The old jenny did inj fact cook iteself. Flung solder from the armature all out and shorted the whole thing. So it is at the shop for re-rebuild. Joy!
Good news is the beat up core I got off E-pay is solid and charges well, just needs a new end cap and a wide belt pulley and I can put it into service. Not a bad score for $9.99 plus shipping.

I got a problem my self with the 64. The two speed vacuum valve started giving me trouble it got feeling like mush and would not shift in to low. I pulled it out and found it to be a simple fix, the cable sheath was coming loose and it only took the tightening of a swedge fitting to secure it. As long as I had it out I rebuilt it. Cleaned resealed and lubed the whole thing had it working sweet. I put it back in and had hooked the lines up backwards, no big deal I will just swap them around. Well I was trying to pull the lines back off and I broke the housing so now I must find a replacement oh joy.

Gotta live those USPS flate rate boxes, starters, jennys, rocks, all costs the same!

Went to Chilliwack BC today to retrieve a long sought after part for 'Tater. While there are numerous bits of sheet metal that I need to repair or replace, aside from this one part the truck was complete. By some wild chance 3B (Bobb) had in his massive collection of old trucks, the grille insert and model number, in this case a 370.

The only drag is tha parts are chromed and the finish is still in good shape. So, I have to face the delima of wether or not I should destroy perfectly good, not mention original, chrome and paint it to match the truck, or should I suck up the cash and chrome the rest of the grille?
Ah well, I'll finger it out another day, in the meantime 'Tater is still suckin for a generator and I'm waiting for either the mad scientist to get it back to me, or the pulley 1946Chevy1 is s'posed to send to me gets here so I can get her rolling again.
Hate lettin her sit so long, not to mention it's just a matter of time afore the property manager or owner gets on my case about the truck,... Joy!

Oh yes, and on the way up there & back I passed this ooooooold big bolt on the side of the road in Nooksak WA across from the Whatcom Farmers Co-Op. Guessin it's from the early teens or 20's as it's got the solid steel wheels with rubber bonded to the rim. OLD beastie there. Only body parts remaining are the firewall , bonnet, and grille.

Swapped the number onto the painted insert I already have, no need to mess up that nice chrome. Just painted in the numbers so they would fit in better with the emblems on the truck. Thinking that down the road here I'm going to smooth out more of the dings and dents & have all of the grille pieces powder coated.

Also, found a good set of vintage PerLux 200T fog lamps and got them mounted in there as well. Not wired in yet, but dont look too bad and should help with these dark roads up here.

OK, I am alive. It's been several months since I was on here, just been suffering internet burnout (reading through my posts here I seem to have a chronic case of IBO) and haven't really had much time, or money for that matter, to do anything with Tater other than try to drive her at least once a week.
Done one job this year, not advertising much right now either. Have issues I need to fix before getting back into heavy hauls, she's in the driveway now so I can yank the tranny and install new gaskets. Leaks a bit too much for my liking, worse than my VW anyway. Also have to pull the right rear spring pack and get new pins and bushings for it, the slop is making the spring pack splay out, not good under heavy loads!

But I have been having other fun with the old beast. Check out my new mechanic!
OK, she's not really my new mechanic, but she does work on cars for a living and models on the side. Did a shoot with her using the Bomber and Tater as the backdrop. Was fun.

Got my mitts on a AM radio out of a '57 chev truck, gonna see what needs to be done to make it work and IF it can fit into my beast with some tweaking. I also have an under-dash casette deck made in the early 70's that woun't look too out of place under there. Doesn't hurt that I have over 300 tapes I can listen to either.

That's a good looking truck! My dream is to get my big bolt looking as good as that. But if you really want to see a Mater's ugly cousin, take a look at my big bolt project.

Tater has gotten some good care over the years, and no small measure of bad owners. But I think the nice exterior is due to the 3 paintjobs it'shad to help cover the ugly. Kinda like puttin lipstick on a sow.

OK, I done did it. I found a Pertronix module and installed it on 'Tater. The rotor magnet didn't wanna fit, but I "coaxed" it on with a spark plug socket and a rubber mallet.
She fired right up, was about 5* after TDC, so just had to tweak the timing a touch. Overall runs great, but I'm still keeping the old guts in the cab, just in case!

IF I can get off my hiney today I need to drop the transmission out and replace the gaskets. Tired of dripping oil all over the durned place! Not to mention the cost of topping it off every few months,...

Once that's done I'm installing the Delco AM radio & a under dash casette deck. Radio needs work, but I have lots of tapes! Ahhh, tunes in the truck, yes!

Well, otherwise we're not havin the most fun with things other than my big bolt. $ is tight and seein as I'm not getting any trucking work any more (one job this year, made a whole $25, at least tax time will be easy!). I need to find an insurance company that might insure this beast without having to use a comercial policy. Just costing me too durned much! That & I dont have anyplace to keep somthing that big under lock & key like most places require. I dont wanna insure it as a collector either coz I DO use it as a dump truck from time to time, not just a real purdy driveway decoration! :P

Just hoping things level out soon or we may have to find 'Tater a new home. Registration & insurance is killin me without makin any income with this beast. On the same front I cant afford real advertising either which may bring me more work.
Also been lookin at selling the Bomber, or at least trading it for a newer Honda Goldwing (cheap insurance, cheap on gas, & I miss my scoot!), better option as I doubt anyone will give me half what I put into that little car.

My father in law was up last week from CA ad I took him for a run to the sea plane base and back. He really liked the truck, altho he seemed a little paranoid at the lack of seat belts (still on the "need to do" list).
Never got anywhere with the radio or tape deck, $$ again. But at the very least I have them on hand for when I can get back to work on these things.

OK, fried Jenny blues AGAIN!! Made a dump run today, and when I stopped to see our room mate for a moment the gen light was on when I shut her down. So I popped the hood and rapped on the regulator a few times to no avail. So I climbed up and disconnected the wires to the jenny. As I'm doing this I see wisps of smoke coming from the pulley vents and it smells like hot solder. Joy! I never got the end plate or wide pulley for my spare jenny, so I'm purdy well skroo'd, & y'all dont wanna know what it cost me last time this happened seein as I had to have the armature re-wound. & of course my tags are due by the end of the month. It's flippin criminal, I tell ya,...

What I wanna know is there a way to swap out these old relay regulators for a solid state type with no moving parts. Keep the original look without the original pain in the butt relays. I dont have the pennies to spare to buy lunch most days, so gettin one of those spiffy PowerGEN alternators that look like the OEM parts is out of the question. I may have to break down (no pun intended) and convert her over to an internaly regulated alternator, I just wanted to keep her looking as stock as possible.

OH, & for those that are interested, we haven't gotten to the point where we had to sell one of the rigs. Standin in front of that door, but haven't knocked just yet. Good news is I just accepted a job offer from an aircraft rework facility in Everett, WA to start in early January. I've been trying to get on with this place since before I retired a couple years ago, but they've just now started to hire people full time again after the airline colapse started in April of '08.
So yeah, major bump in pay, I get to leave this job I have now that makes we want to kick puppies on a daily basis & go back to what I'm good at, making planes fly.
So, I wont be having to sell any of the toys, and in a few months I should have most of our debt under control so we can move to place with room for them. As an added bonus I get an excuse to buy some more tools!

Hey good to hear you found gainful employment. I do have a couple of stock regulators if you want to make another trip down here you can have them. I know that it is a ways for you to travel but we would just have to make a day out of it maybe throw a big piece of meat in the smoker or something???

I did luck into a NOS end plate for my spare jenny on eBay last night, just chase down a pulley and I'll have two complete units to play with.

Things are going much better, just not with the truck.
She's been sitting in the same place since the jenny puked. Just haven't had the free $$ for this years tags, the jenny repairs, and the comercial insurance. Bottom line, with no business coming in to offset the cost of operation I cant afford to keep her fully licensed & insured (not to metion fuel). So, there she sits,...
I'd like to get collector plates on her, but then I cant haul anything but a passenger or two in it, and what's the point of havin a dump truck you cant use?
To rub it in I got a call for a bank owned property clean up last week that would have taken at least 3 days and had the potential to pay a few grand. Typical! :p

Currently weighing the points of selling either 'Tater or the Bomber. Not looking good for the old girl in a "one or the other" situation. Realisticly I should sell them both, get all our bills in order, move, THEN buy a toy.

I always do everything in the wrong order. Buy without needed cash to get what I just bought running, having more cars than what I can fit in my garage... move in the period of economical diaster, getting expensive loans... All depending on a reaction from some other part then the brain, when it somes to something fun, I react, and then afterwards think, hmm, was this really a good idea...

BUT it's fun, always something is happening.

Si if I were you I'd move, bring them all... and then sell if I have to. Right or wrong ? No idea... I just hate to sell stuff.

I hear ya, I've learned my lesson on making REALLY dumb purchases when my job future was unclear, but not entirely. One reason I'm weighing the future of some of my toys is I just bought another one to commute to work.
With what I've been spending on fuel I figgured why toss all that cash in a hole (or in my "carbon footprint" more like) and have nothin to show for it. So, I stopped by to look at bikes and found an '05 Harley Electra Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCUI) that the dealer was getting ready for auction to make room for the 2011 models. In the one day between when I saw it and the next day when I came to buy it they had knocked it down an additional $3K, so I got a helluva deal on it.

Still, more toys and hobbies than I have money or attention for. Thinkin I'm gonna thin out some of the other stuff, toss the $ into bills, and put off the vehicles till I absolutely have to.

I got off my arse and put the new end cover on my spare jenny, went to pull the one off the truck so I could swap the pulleys, and the shaft is too short,... Well, poop! Yet nother time I could really use access to a machine shop, I could just make a new pulley out of a billet round.
So, I went out and put the jenny back on, gave the regulator a couple solid whacks, and reconnected the wiring. I got lucky and didn;t nuke the jenny this time, it's running and charging well, so far. I still need to get a new reg and buy some diodes to put inline so this doesn't happen again.
'Tater is still sittin tho, payin down other bills and such before I pay the tabs on her and bring the insurance back on line. She's not just sittin around rusting tho, I have a photo shoot in the works with a local model that wants to do a pin-up set with the truck.

In other news, made it past the 90 day mark with the new job on Sunday. Doin well and might survive the current "restructuring". Time will tell, but either way I hope to have this truck back on the road and working for her supper again soon.

Still alive, still got 'Tater out back, just haven't been in a puttering about on the interwebz kinda mood for some while. Been busy with work and other projects, no real time for the truck but I try to keep her in good shape. I did can my small biz tho, I did $25 in business last year. Of course in the months after I canned the biz I get calls,... Typical!

'Tater is still sitting. I fire her up and give her a bath regularly, keep up on the lubrication, she's got enough rust and squeaks as it is! No longer having a place to work has put all my projects on hold, I even missed the local show last year, and it's not lookin good for this year either. I did get back into my photography at least, so I have an outlet for my creativity with two sets published on an international website so far.

Well then,...
Been a while for me, even for lurking. Life, aging, and health issues have kept me from my favorite money wasting projects for some time. Haven't seen the point in paying the tonnage for my dump since 2013, so other than running up and down the road to blow the crap out and make sure the tires stay round(ish) my old girl isn't seeing much action.
I did notice the brake fluid was leaking out of the left rear slave, so I've had it in the drive way for a bit while I get my poo together and bore it out and change the cups. Once that is fixed and I get the collector gasket replaced (again,... need a brace for the down pipe) I'm going to try getting her a collector plate and drive her more regularly. See if I can't rehome the old girl before the motor ends up like the original one did, which would be heartbreaking after all the effort I put into restoring the heart of this old beast.

We made it through the pandemic craziness ok. We all go it, having had full on Influenza 20 years ago, I can say this was a breeze. So we got lucky, many didn't.

Tater is still sitting out back, I really need to go crank her over and burn the winter humidity out of the block.
I have tried selling the old girl a couple times, but selling anything on the internet will make you insane. So currently need to fix a brake line and take her down to the local park n sell, see if I can get a real bite and get her to a new home. We don't have the space for me to work on her any more, base auto hobby shop close for good. I'm keeping my Volksrod in storage till I figure out what I wanna be when I grow up, but currently making plans to sell/give away a lot of stuff, store the rest, and buy an RV. Money and attention going into our new Cherokee, setting it up for weekend camping and making it towable. Once the RV and Jeep are paid off (few years yet), I'm retiring and we are gonna wander this great nation till we find "home". No idea where that may be, but Washington is going swirly, so somewhere East of the Cascades for sure. Just know we want to see some of this country I gave 20 years to before it either burns down or I get too old to appreciate it.
Needless to say, Tater is low priority, and it's bugging me that she doesn't have a home where she can be taken care of, even it it's banging around a farm hauling poop, at least that is what she was built for!

Have you tried listing "Tater" in our own Trucks for Sale forum ???

If you have other "Tater" related stuff you are looking to sell, you could offer them up in Truck Parts for Sale OR if you decide the might be "give-aways", list them in the Swap Meet Freebies forum .

Thanks Gdads51, I do have a few odds and ends I may get into the parts for sale forum, but still hanging in there.
The real issue is any time I get her fixed I have too much fun driving around and decide not to sell! It's a disease, I swear!

If I had an affordable means I would get it to my dad out in the wilds of Eastern Kansastan, he would have it fixed and working for her dinner again in no time. He's a bigger tinkerer than I am, but has *much* better self control!
And, better part, it would already be over there whenever we end up moving that direction since the folks live about an hour from my companies mid-west facility. Cruising those old country roads in an old bolt sounds much more relaxing than doing here in WA where people have apparently lost what little common sense they had before the covid debacle
