I recently did a TBI (throttle body injection) conversion to the 54 235 in my 52 Chevy 3600. Prior to that I did the HEI conversion using a big cap distributor (the one that has the coil in the cap). When I did the TBI conversion I removed the vacuum advance and wired up the ignition control module (mounted to the inner fender) so the computer could control the timing.

Anyways I wanted to clean it up a bit and have it so the ignition control module is inside the distributor. The HEI distributor I used came from a 250 Inline 6 which the module can't be mounted inside it. I was wondering if a v8 big cap distributor would work, and just use my 6 cylinder cap, like one that was used on the TBI engines? Im going to the u-pull-it yard this weekend to look around. Anything else that might work?

If that won't work, I was looking at langdons mini HEI. I assume thats a modified GM distributor like what you would find on a 4.3 or 2.8? How hard would it be to make a distributor from a 4.3 or 2.8 work in my 235. Is it the same as following this tech tip http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/HEI_mini.html

this is the tech tip I followed or the big cap HEI http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/hei_conversion.htm

Thanks

OK thanks,

Went to the yard today but didn't look around much.

Langdon's site is down at the moment, I may contact him and see if I purchased his mini HEI small cap distributor, would I be able to install the electronic advance stuff from a 2.8 or 4.3 distributor from the junkyard.

Are there any tech tips that go into more detail (more pictures) on how to modify a distributor from a 2.8 or 4.3 to fit in a 235.

There is a write-up explaining how to use the 2.8 HEI on the OldGMCTrucks.com forum. You'll probably have to join to see it.

I have one of each in my shop but haven't modified either yet so I can't do any more than point....

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...
