The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Stoplight switch from Classic Parts

I just received a replacement stoplight switch for my '56. Even to my wife's non-mechanical eye it is completely backward from the original (electrical connections backward, spring loaded arm backward, mounting plate backward--an exact mirror image of the original). Do I just mount it backwards (connections facing rearward and arm about 1/2 inch off its orginal position on the brake pedal linkage or?????

Anybody else have this experience? I really should have brake lights for the trip to Riverside. And please don't tell me I need to learn Chinese to accomplish this install.

For some unknown reason, there was a "left" and a "right" in stoplight switches. It may have had something to do with the model year or the style of the truck OR the cars may have used the opposite style than the trucks OR you may have to mount it "upside-down. I ran into that once but I can't remember what I did to fix the problem. I think I took it back to the Chev dealer and got the right one. Its been a long,long time ago. Hope that helps.Bill

there are actually 2 different switches among the TF years - or maybe among models - or maybe different assembly plants .... as billinwis sez, you may be able to mount it backwards, although it could be a stretch for the wires - the main difference is the terminal pins on one will face up and on the other face down when the actuator arm is the right way

The one I got for my '56 was the opposite of what I had. I mounted where it would function.

Thanks for the info., guys--especially Cletis. If it worked for him, it should work for me as long as the wires will reach. Will go ahead and get it mounted.
