I bought a 54 Suburban in Billings and have barely begun"repairs" in Maine.
No time and money to get it on the road. Here in Vacationland, everybody that actually lives here works seven days a week.Grump grump.
The Suburban has a '57 283 in it with what I think is a
2 1/2 ton tranny but I have a '55 261 that's waiting to go in which I suppose is more truck than toy.
Anybody know which year's frame and suspension from which
later model Chevy would be easiest to swap the body to?

Welcome John, don't let the money thing get you down, my best friend and I have been working on his 57 step side for 25 years! He is painting his truck right now in his garage and it looks awesome. Imagine all the fun your gonna have. Good luck and keep us posted with some pictures.

Welcome John, good to see the six going back in, I also have a 261. I'm not much help with the frame/suspension swap, maybe try the 'general truck' forum.

John, welcome to the forum. Don't rush into anything, your 54 Burb is kinda unique. Give some thought to restoring it, as opposed to hotrodding. If the original frame is in good condition, no reason to change it out. Keep in mind none of the swaps are easy! With all the upgrades available, you can make a sweet ride out of any old vehicle. With the V8 already in it the PO must have made some mods? Most likely the steering? We like pics!!!

Welcome to the STovebolt John. I think all of understand the money part of restoring and working on these old trucks. Thats why I spent 5 years on the 37 and I've been on the panel for almost 4 years now. Just take it nice and easy. One bolt at a time. During the time when money is so tight there is always a ton of just plain labor/work to do on these things. Its surprising what just a few minutes a day will do on getting them back on the road.
This is the place. We will help anyway we can and we will even whine, cry, shout, cheer and celebrate with you as you go along. Keep us posted and good luck.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
