Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | I tried to email a guy named Bruce (aka Phat) but he hasn't replied in about two weeks. I was wondering if a 1/2 ton Chev rearend from a 81-87 might work in my 50 1/2 ton. Are these worth the trouble? Do they even fit somewhat? I measured one from flange to flange, I think it was about 57 inches. On the 50, its rear was about the same. I just need confirmation, and advice from someone who has done this swap. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 | I installed a 81 Chevy 1/2 rear in my 51 Chevy 1/2 6 years ago.Used the 4x4 rear axle so it has the 6 lug pattern to match the front in my case. The axle looks fine ,its only about an inch and a half wider than the stock set up.You have to set up the axle with the correct pinion angle, then weld up the new spring perches.Have a driveshaft made, new U bolts and of course change out the old torque tube transmission to a tranny from a later model GM vehicle. There are a few odds and ends I didn't mention, you'll figue it out.I had never swapped in a axle from a different vehicle before ,but it was no problem at all. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 A teacher, but always an apprentice. | | A teacher, but always an apprentice. Thanks a lot. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 17 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2002 Posts: 17 | I installed a 67 1/2 ton rear end in my 48 panel. wasn't to hard. The hardest was the pinion angle.Needs to to be real close, or you go through many a ujoint I was lucky and had the trany end piece to go to the open drive line. Used the drive shaft out of an 62 Chevy 1/2 ton had to have it shortend and balanced. Good luck.
Been driven and loving my 50 for 27 years. With the same stuff Chevy put in it from the get go.
