The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Paint Chipping

As i am putting my 1957 Chevy truck back together after paiting, I am starting to notice the paint is chipping in some areas. Tonight I was tighting one of the fender bolts...and not even that tight,,,just trying to start the nut....and I see it chipped . I am starting to see this through the truck..What causes the chipping? Prep work? Poor paint job? How do I prove if it is soemthing to worry about?

I would vote for all of the above. I am not a bodyman though, but have messed around with enough old stuff. The proof is in the detail. Was it billed as "new paint"? Are you going for recourse from the seller? Might be time to get the ambulance chasers involved.

I will have to see if I can find someone that is an "expert" I guess to test the paint (or whatever they do) to see what is going on. I just think it is strange the paint is chipping so easily.

need to talk to some painters Jon, looks to me like poor bond between paint and primer - might talk to the ones who did the job, but get some 2nd opinions - prolly not much to be done about it

Is this that $35k paint job? I hope the lawyers are better than the painter in your neighborhood.

Definitely looks like a poor bond between the paint and primer to me. A little touchup is unavoidable but chunks falling off like that is definitely not good.

Once (if ever) I get it on the road I can take it to a shop to have it checked out.

What brand and line of primer and paint was used? just currious.

One thing You can do to keep from more chipping is only turn the nut side of the bolts that have a washer under them that way the sharp edges of the bolt head or screw head is not pulling on the paint surface also if you can get some small machine washers and use them under the bolt head or screw head you'll barely see them and it will help not chip more paint,Im not saying theres not a problem with you're paint but it will help from more damage to it.

Thank you for the info...Yeah that is a very good idea on not moving the bolt side.
Now, is there a way to fix that chip and make it look like it never was there?

I did chip or scratch in a few spots because I painted than put the truck together but I brought her back to the painter and had him do it. It took him 1 day to go over the truck and fix a couple of scratchs that I did.

How old is the paint? Paint might be "dry" in a few days but can take months to fully cure. Even fully cured paint is susceptible to that kind of damage from a screw fastener if it's over tightened. You ever notice modern vehicles rarely use screw fasteners on a painted surface any more.
