I took the side plate off and it looks good visually. My question is , how difficult is it to overhaul this unit. New bearings, inspect the gears etc... I have have the shop manual and access to shop tools (arbor press etc...). I am doing a full restoration, so now would be the time to get this taken care of.

Those three speeds are pretty straightforward. If you have the manual AND the necessary tools, it will be a fun project. The hardest part is knowing when a component is actually worn and needs replacing...that's where experience comes into play! Go for it.

Check out the tranny rebuild on this site: http://community.webshots.com/user/geezer You can get by with most good tools but will need a good puller with various length arms. You can make up a "shiv" to remove the clip holding the rear mainshaft bushing. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help. You will need a good shop manual although they don't cover everything. I also had a donor and if I had any questions on how to do something, I did it on the donor one first and made my mistakes there. Then I did it on my original tranny once i knew how. | | |
