However, i have recently encountered a problem when starting the truck. It usually starts on first crank, but i began to have a really loud grinding noise when i depressed the foot starter. I swapped out the starter and i am still haveing the grinding sound about half the time. When it does engauge it starts just fine, but about half the time it grinds like you cannot believe. I have been told to try starter shims? Anyone have any experience with these and if so how many did you use?

If this is the stomp starter, there could be worn linkage issues.
When installing a new starter, does the old linkage get reused!
If the starter switch is actuated before the drive gear is engaged, it will grind.
A worn ring gear could cause this, but checking the linkage would be a good starting point.
When you say you 'swapped out' the starter, does this mean you installed a new or rebuilt starter.

I pulled the flywheel cover and turned the motor over a bit at a time until I came across some worn teeth on the ring gear. Most of the time the starter engages on the good teeth but once in a while they seem to contact the bad teeth giving that grinding sound. | | |

Had a similar problem with my 1938 1/2 ton with stomp starter. I found the problem to be the starter switch was not correct for the model truck. It was for a passenger car (later I think) and the contact was slightly "taller" than the correct one for my truck. The motor was engaging before the drive gear was meshed with the flywheel ring gear. At least with my truck, the correct switch made the difference. | | |

with my '48
I had this problem and it was the ring gear was worn out... my cheapskate brother told me of how you could simply turn the ring gear around (with slight modifications) and we did and it worked perfect...
I had to heat the flywheel in my wife's oven (might suggest an option to that) but it was hard to get back on but heat did the trick... no more loud grinding noise every other time... | | |
