in this schematic I found in a 1950 popular mechanics viable?

Looking specifically at the coil it doesn't really show which post is pos or neg.

The old car manual project has alot of this kind of stuff. Search there.

"viable"? it appears to be an accurate basic representation of a general ignition system, but what's wrong with the one in your shop manual?

+/- will usually be marked on the coil - pos goes to the hot spot, the neg goes to the side peg of the dist

I was looking for a simplified schematic that is easier to read than the ones I had seen, your reply as to the neg to dist is exactly what I needed though, thanks!

Hy 45nut, the terminal which is connected to the distrbutor from the coil, is dependant on the chassis ground. On negative ground vehicles the coils negative terminal connects to the distributor, on positive ground vehicles the positive terminal of the coil connects to the distributor, hope that helps.
