Quite some time ago I managed to get the truck painted and engine rebuilt. The interior of the truck is stripped of gauges and a new wiring harness is waiting to be installed. I would like to get the truck running so that I could move it around. I have identified the engine harness and where all the wire go. Beyond that it's still a work in progress. My question is what connections do I need in order to start the engine and charge the battery? Can I achieve getting it to a running state without gauges? If you connect the battery to the starter, and run a jumper to the coil the motor will run if all the other ignition wires to the plugs are in and the coil is connected to the distributor. This will not charge the battery, but you should have enough in the battery to move the rig around. To shut off remove the jumper to the coil.

Shut it off from inside the cab. Disconnect the battery before you go in the house though. No you don't need any gauges.

I found about that paying attention to the oil line is really important, especially with new carpets!
