My intention was to switch to 30 amp if needed but it hasn't blown yet. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,751 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,751 | Are you running an alternator or a generator? The fuse link needs to be able to handle the highest battery charging current that's available from the charging system after startup, if you're running a standard wiring harness with the charging current going through the ammeter. I've seen short current surges of 80-100 amps from some alternators after a long cranking session. If you have a separate charging wire from the alternator to the battery, no problem, but the ammeter won't work right. Use a 50 amp fuse link, but be prepared to go bigger if it burns out from high alternator current. Jerry

Someone local said they thought it should have a 35 amp alternator but were not 100% sure. Does this sound right and if it is should I try a 30 amp or use a 50amp? Mechanical work I'm ok at but electrical systems not so much.

Most of the internal-regulated 10SI models are 65 to 100 amp capacity. If you choose to use a fusible link between the dash cluster and the ammeter, it should be able to carry at least most of the alternator's output. If there's a direct wire from the alternator output terminal to the top terminal of the starter, you could use a 40 or 50 amp fuse or fuse link to the ignition switch or other junction point to the inside accessories, and an idiot light instead of an ammeter to monitor charging system performance.
