So yesterday I took the wife for her first ride in the ol 50, no probs. Today I go out to take the kids for their first ride and the 235 knocks when I turn her over, then when she does start shes blowing smoke like crazy! I messed with the fuel screw on the Rochester to see if I could lean her out a bit which worked for a minute, but when I put the air cleaner back on she went back to smokin. Please help o Gods of the BOLT?!!

If it has the oil bath air cleaner,maybe it has too much oil in it,causing the smoke.

Even though you mentioned messing with the carb let me a question first......is it BLACK gasoline smoke or is it BLUE oil smoke. Strange that it just started acting crazy like that.

.....and can you expound on the "knock" a little more? The answer to these two questions will help a lot.

When I turn it over it has been knocking (sounds like more twards the firewall) but once its running, no knock.
Also today I noticed a oil leak (few drops) where the drive line is attached up front.

Take the oil bath breather off and see if it doesn't stop after the oil in the cylinders burns off. If it does, then you have a leak there that you have to identify and fix. If not, then it could be internals, rings, valves, etc. need more info to know for sure. Leaks you mention near the rear main?

HHmm, leaking oil near rear main, "knocking" when starting near fire wall......thats leaning toward a rear main gone bad??

It may be a good idea to pull the valve cover and check all the valves/valve springs. Whatever you do I would not run it a lot until you can identify whats going on. Right now it does not sound good.

Not what I wanted to hear, I still have a date with the DMV to get her CA plates.

Cracked head, Im done with this engine! Im going to limp her to the DMV get my plates, put her on non op and start building her V8..

Sad to hear you want to dump the six banger, heads are around for reasonable, check the swap meet, ebay and Jim Carter has some from time to time. I understand your frustration, I love 350's too, but the old I6's are cool too.

I had a change of heart. I went to Hot August Nights in Reno this year and saw a ton of old trucks wtih V8s in them. I also saw a few with I6s and honestly those were the ones drawing the crouds.
The head ended up to be just fine, I had it rebuilt and now Im going to start on the block. What I'd like to do is bolt the 235 up to a 700R4 I have allready. Do you know if this would be a good idea or if its even possible?
