I tried doing a search but can't really find an answer for my particular question, so I am hoping someone can guide me on the right direction.
I am redoing all of my electrical system (1951 1/2 ton) and will be going with 12v and a single wire alternator; however, I want to keep it as stock as possible...I am even using cloth wire...so I want to use a regulator.
My question is should I use a 6 v or a 12v regulator and how should I wire it? I seen some diagrams where the regulator is bypass and others where the connect to one of the terminals only...

I am just confused....Thx

if you're gonna use the alternator, then being internally regulated, you totally bypass the regulator so 6 or 12 is meaningless - the one terminal connection is using the original wiring which just needs a couple wires tied together [bypassing the reg actually], if you gut the regulator you can tie the terminals together inside so you can use 2 or 3 terminals and make it look more like it's used wink

Turn the regulator over and solder a HEAVY wire, like #8 or #10 between the Arm. terminal and the Bat. terminal, just inside the regulator base where it's out of sight from the front. Take the cover off, and wedge a piece of plastic, like a section cut out of an oil bottle or a milk jug, between all the sets of points. You might have to double up to get a tight fit between the cutout relay points. Replace the cover. Install the regulator in its normal position and run a #10 wire from the Arm. terminal to the main charge terminal on the alternator, and run another #10 wire from the Bat. terminal of the regulator to the back of the ammeter. Run a piece of #18 wire to the F. terminal, and tape it into the wire harness- - - -connected to nothing. If you're running a regular 10SI alternator, you'll need a jumper wire from the Bat. terminal of the alternator to the #2 terminal of the rectangular plug hole in the housing. Your internal voltage regulator will handle the alternator control.

Jerry, so with your described approached, like Bill said, it won't matter if the relugator is 6 or 12 volts? or do I have to go 12 volts.

Thx

no it doesn't matter, you're using it as a junction point for the wires in place of a splice, it's pure decoration, zero function

You could even use an empty regulator housing with nothing inside, so the original voltage doesn't matter. Just try to use a junk regulator- - - -it's a shame to butcher up one that's still working.

Just a quick question, what color were the original Delco Regulators? I'm just using mine for decoration. Was Gloss Black the primary color?

The cover was gloss black, with the main housing possibly galvanized metal, silvery-colored and unpainted, anyway.
