| | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 144 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2010 Posts: 144 | I recently installed a new speedometer cable with a plastic male part that enters the speedometer in my '53 3600. After a few hundred miles, the speedometer quit working. I inspected both ends of the cable and found that the transmission end is square steel and looks like new but the speedometer end is plastic and appears to have rounded off to a point. Should the proper cable have steel on both ends? Any other ideas?

It should work fine as long as the spedometer is working properly. If the spedometer is binding up it will brake the tip off of the cable. Usually you have to remove the spedo and dissassemble it to clean and lube it properly. You could try a little WD40 on the gears and maybe get lucky.
