The battery was dead, so I took the battery out of my 53 to get it started. Since my 53 is on jack stands while I'm working on the steering, I set the battery on the garage floor.
Today I decided to start my 53 for a cruise around the block. I put the battery back in it and it was dead. I tried charging it and it won't hold a charge.
Did leaving it on the garage floor for only 3 weeks kill it?
I always thought that was an old wives tale about not setting a battery on a concrete floor. The battery is only 1 year old. One that's really badly discharged will get a condition called "sulfation" where the lead sulfate that forms on the cell plates as the battery discharges forms stable crystals that are very hard to dissolve. Charge it at least overnight at a slow rate, 5 to 10amps, then comnpletely discharge it by connecting something like a headlight bulb. Diuscharge and recharge several times, and the battery will begin to recover. Check the acid with a hydrometer to see how well it's taking a charge. Full charge specific gravity is between 1.265 and 1.300.

I have them on everything because there is nothing more frustrating than wanting to ride/drive something or use the tractor and it won't freaking start.
