I have a 1951 3/4 ton with 8 lugs that has the 4:10/1 gear ratio (I think) it is.

I also have a 1956 1/2 ton rear axle and front spindles.

Now the Questions, ..

1) What is the gear ratio in the 1956 axle?

2) Can I unbolt and replace the axle with the other without a major operation, and will the front spindles swap out the same?

I am sure someone out there has either done something simular, or given it a try.

Thanks in advance.

The standard gear ratio for a 1/2 ton in 56 was 3:90 to one. That ratio was fairly standard from 55 through 59. If it came with an overdrive it probably had a 4:10.

I think your 3/4 ton would be 4.56 stock.

The 1956 rear from a 1/2 ton truck would be either a 390 or a 410.The 390 came with the 3 speed manual and the 410 with a 4 speed manual.

Well is it worth the effort to change it to the newer rear end and can the front spindles be changed to match, or is it even worth atempting?

Old CT Guy,
I recently installed a T5 (.72 OD) in front of a 4.10. I've only had it on the freeway once-I'm working on tightening up the steering now- but the combination seems good. I'm guessing that 2,000 rpm gets me to about 70 mph, which is as fast as I need to go in this truck.

My original differential was a 4.57, and changing to the 4.10 made quite a difference.
