I HAVE JUST HAD THE REAR END IN MY 64 C10 REBUILT. I USED THE HOUSING AND AXLES FROM A 70 CHEVY AND REPLACED ALL BEARINGS AND SEALS. IT DRIVES GREAT NOW EXCEPT IT MAKES A HOWLING SOUND. IT ONLY DOES IT AFTER I GET UP TO SPEED AND IM KIND OF FLOATING. IT DOESNT MAKE ANY NOISE WHEN I'M COASTING OR WHEN I'M TAKING OFF.
THE MECHANIC SAID THE FACTORY GEARS ARE IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR A LITTLE WEAR.
WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THE NOISE? IT DIDN'T MAKE IT BEFORE.

Stop YELLING as it's considered rude and my guess it that it's probably the gear lash.

bneilw24,

My guess is that it is setup incorrectly. Take it back to the mechanic and have him drive it.

He said it was set to factory specs. He already rode with me and heard the noise. We pulled the cover back off and couldn't see anything obviously wrong. My guess is it's in the lash.
THANKS FOR THE INPUT.

Yes, lash adjustment or pinion depth as the case may be. You can use a paint that is made for inspection gear mesh. It is kinda like a yellow liquid lead. you clean off the gears and paint it on the gear face and then rotate the drive shaft to make the paint go between the gears and see what the pattern looks like for proper mesh. You then need to check the lash. You will need a dial indicator for that. What you are looking for is how much slack is there when you move the ring gear up and down. uuuhhh?? Go to the parts house find a Haynes (sp) manuel open it up to the page where it discribes how to do this. With out pictures it is hard to explain. The book also has examples of what to look for in the lead paint as far as a good pattern verses a bad pattern.

Oh an who decided that writting in all caps is yelling. Shoot man at most dealers your invoice is written in all caps. I have been told that stuff about yelling. Did Bill Gates come up with that. Just asking.
