I picked up an old Saginaw 4 speed because my original one broke a tooth on the main cluster gear the first day I put the truck on the road. yea bummer. anyhow this 2nd trans went in real easy and shifts beautifully but makes a LOT of whining noise in 1st , 2nd, and 3rd. It's quiet in 4th. The noise stops when you push in the cluthch. The throwout bearing is OK. Any ideas on what causes this? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The front input shaft bearing is probably rough. Pull the trans & remove the retainer. Shine a light in the bearing & slowly turn the shaft. Look for any scoring or pitting on the inner & outer races & the balls. The bearing can be replaced without tearing down the trans. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. In 4th. gear, there's little to no load on the cluster gear, and the niose of a bad bearing is minimized. Time for a rebuild, before you chew up another bunch of expensive gears. A bearing and seal kit isn't that costly. Jerry
