contamination, maybe left on imperfectly cleaned emblems, maybe from polish you or the chromer used, or something in the paint, could just be entrained air from using a brush - should have been visible before the paint dried ... the wrinkling next to the 3100 looks like recoating before the firt coat had enough flash time .... pretty messy on the tops of the letters/numbers too for a "pro"

I'd clean it all off with the right solvent and do it myself with nail polish ohwell

Hi Bill,
Yup pretty upset about this. Bad luck on my choices of people to do the work all around. I think I will just do it myself
What happened was they guy painted the fender emblems black. When I showed up to get them and told him this he painted them within 45 minutes the correct red. He gave them to me still wet. Wife was there so I did not want to make a big deal...
But will now.

Jon

ahh, likely then a reaction between the 2 coats, maybe even different brands of paint, and no doubt he laid the red on thick to cover with one coat, not a good practice

Jon, bottom line is YOU don't have to be an expert and know all of the technical terms. It's HIS responsibility to provide you with professional results unless you specify otherwise. Just take it back & tell him the lifted paint is not acceptable.

Did you tell him to paint them red to start with? If so, make him do them over. They guy's got a bad attitude which happens all too often when crooks have more work than they deserve.

If you didn't specify color he should have asked.

Any one hand that kind of mess over to a customer doesn't deserve your money.

Hey guys,
Yeah I felt he rushed the job and just free handed without taping off the letters or doing a good enough job. I did send him a photo of what the fender emblems looked like and yes he did know they were red.

In that case just take it back and tell him you're not satisfied. Point out the problems and see what he says. If he's an honest guy he'll do it over... and do it right but I wouldn't expect him to tape off anything. He's a pin striper and good enough with a brush.

You could have done it better if you just spray them with red enamel and wipe it off the raised stuff with a thinner dampened rag. It's simple and if you screw it up it takes all of ten minutes to wash it off and do it again.

The wrinkling I see is usually the result when the reducer/thinner in the top coat reacts with the paint under it.

I got that same result once using rustoleum in a rattle can over rustoleum that came from a qt. can.

Take all the paint off and start over.

Dan

Terrible job taping of the surfaces to protect. Looks like the solvent from the first coat was not allowed to dry or flash and he just laid the second and subsequent coats on thick, trapping the solvent from the first and resulting in the lift or rippling effect you have. I believe this was already posted by another member, so get your $ back and try it yourself if you want, can't do much worse than that quality wise. Who knows, with a little patience, you could be a "Foose" in the making.

I got that same crinkly effect when I sanded a chip out of my valve covers and wiped it with PRE, then sprayed it too soon. Or it wasn't compatible.

I have painted these type parts with testors enamel paint that we used on our model cars, planes, and boats - and got a better look.

But then, I like work trucks not trailer queens.

It is what you want that counts

Gave the guy the emblems back. I told him I expect a better job. I hope he got the message. I will post what happens next!
Thanks all...

Good luck seeing those again within a year. I hope you gave him a deadline.

Pick up a quart of enamel from the hardware store and a couple of artist brushes and do it your self.

If you don't hear something by this time next week, just show up and see where he is with your project. Might have to as we say down South, stomp a mudhole in his rearend and walk it dry.

The red "wrinkled".
Wrinkling is caused by too many top coats to soon over un-flashed paint. It looks a lot like a fingerprint...
Go get a book on Automotive Painting it will cover (or should) trouble shooting paint problems.
This was very amaturish for a guy taking money for work.Paint needs to "flash off" between coats or it will have a "orange peel" texture, wrinkling is extream orange peel.
Wrinkling can also be caused by soft (not yet fully dried or cured)incompatable undercoats.
This guy shot the red over the black before it was fully dry. He should have removed the black, made sure the surface was properly prepared and applied the right stuff, WAITED till it was "cured to service" and THEN called you.
