Started making noise in all gears but 4th, and even in neutral sounds like two gears are trying to mesh. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | I'm not a transmission expert but if its quiet in 4th I'd expect either a bearing or a broken gear on the counter shaft.
It doesn't really matter because your options are the same regardless of what's wrong. Either you rebuild it or replace it. I know a guy who rebuilt his and said it was easy. I have a spare so I'd just replace mine if it were giving trouble.

CAREFULLY feel along the inside bottom of the transmission for metal filings, metal chips, etc. A small magnet would be safer to do this with. The caution here is the metal filings can be very sharp. There should be a magnet already inside the transmission (it's task is to collect the filings and parts to keep them from thrashing through the transmission.)
Based on the condition/amount of oil that came out of the transmission and the lookly feely in the transmission you should then post your findings here for further help.
Good Luck

It was bearings and shafts and synchros. but the gears were fine! It got sort-of expensive. I guess I could have done it myself, but just wanted it done quickly.
Sounds like yours has got to come out.
I replaced all the clutch parts while I was in there, too. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | It's definitly bearing noise. Usually is is the front main drive bearing. It can be replaced without tearing down the trans. but it does have to come out. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though.
