It doesn't really matter because your options are the same regardless of what's wrong. Either you rebuild it or replace it. I know a guy who rebuilt his and said it was easy. I have a spare so I'd just replace mine if it were giving trouble.

I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble... | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 150 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 150 | Well, Drain the oil from the transmission, Remove the side plate (drivers side of transmission) and look inside the transmission at the gears and such. CAREFULLY feel along the inside bottom of the transmission for metal filings, metal chips, etc. A small magnet would be safer to do this with. The caution here is the metal filings can be very sharp. There should be a magnet already inside the transmission (it's task is to collect the filings and parts to keep them from thrashing through the transmission.)
Based on the condition/amount of oil that came out of the transmission and the lookly feely in the transmission you should then post your findings here for further help.

It was bearings and shafts and synchros. but the gears were fine! It got sort-of expensive. I guess I could have done it myself, but just wanted it done quickly.
Sounds like yours has got to come out.

Usually is is the front main drive bearing. It can be replaced without tearing down the trans. but it does have to come out.
