Does the motor turn? With everything that holds it in place spinnng the motor might break it loose.

Of course that means you'll be working a little harder to get it back in the right place.

Yes , the engine was actually fired up and taken off a trailer when I bought in March. I can also turn it over by hand, the head and pan are off, I am just trying to "clean " it up. Maybe I should stop while I am ahead? Thanks for comments, Doug

Will the distributor housing turn? Grab the housing just above the vacuum advance with a big pair of channellocks, and turn it back and forth. That will help work the penetrating oil down between the housing and the block. Eventually, the distributor will start to move upward, as well as side to side.

like jerry said does it turn? if it does and if your 228 is set up like it is on my 40 then on the left hand side of the dist. is a bolt with a spring under it. it will not come out unless you remove the bolt. it is what lets the vac. advance work.

Success , I got it with big channel locks, thanks. Just for you info on the 41 the bolt to the left of the distributor holds a plate to the block and the little spring is attached to that plate on the right side of the distributor. A slight change from the 40 to 41. thanks again. doug
