No evidence of any paper residue on the front. Are these needed when I'm re-doing the brakes? I believe they're called "paper gaskets"?

I think it may have been there for rust prevention between the hub and drum, but it is't needed for brake operation. Just clean it all off and maybe a light coat of anti-seize to prevent rust.

The gaskets are available from Chevs of the 40s and Obsolete Chevrolet Parts Company. The gaskets are not mentioned in the Shop Manual I just looked at (1954 Canadian Chevrolet & GMC Trucks) | | |

I put it on top of the shoes for a better photo for you.
