Are they worth anything, and what years pickup did they come on? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 | They are not worth a dime....unless you want to sell them. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | They are 17 inch and narrow and most of them have six lug holes. You see them used but the right tires are expensive and not very desirable on a driver.
If I had a set of these old wheels they would probably be mounted on the wall of my shop, possibly with a clock in one and speakers in the others.
Several companies repo artillery wheels in modern sizes with tubeless profiles and a choice of lug patterns. They are not expensive as custom wheels go and give very close to the same look.

Just because that's what I'd do doesn't mean someone out doesn't want them for a correct restoration of the earlier car or truck they came on. You might offer them in the swap meet and make someone very happy.

I just bought a '40 GMC 3/4 ton pickup to restore and I got a full set of 18 inch x 6.00/ 6.50 artillery wheels with the truck. I bought a full set of hubcaps for them and they look cool. Eventually I'll need some tires to go on those bad boys. I was wondering if any modern sizes fit? Can you run tubes in tubeless radials? I might cut and widen the back rims to give it more stance. I did price out some repro tires but at $175 apiece that's over my budget. Any ideas? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | I might cut and widen the back rims to give it more stance. I'd investigate replacing the hoops with modern tubeless tire hoops. I don't know what size might fit, but widening these wheels would not solve the issues about being tube type and have the tube type rim profile. You might want to talk to one of the shops that make custom wheels. WheelSmith is the name that comes to mind but there are others.

I have to do a restoration on the truck first but will be looking for some 18 x 6.00/ 6.50 tires in the future. I work as a machinist so I have access to equipment to cut the rims and make hoops to weld in. That's a long ways down the road but it's still something to think about.
