I have a heck of a chatter on a '55 2nd series I just bought. I'm wondering if I just have to adjust the rockers or if there are hydraulic lifters to clean out. | | |

You cannot install hydraulics in this block, the hydraulic lifter block has a different oiling system. The correct clearance spec for this engine is intake .006", exhaust .016", both set hot. Don't worry too much about the lifters once you set them, Chevies are supposed to be noisy.

If you are referring to an original truck engine, all truck 216/235/261 engines had mechanical (solid) lifters.
Many (maybe all?) automobile 235 and all Canadian Pontiac 261 engines had hydraulic lifters.
Some later truck 235 and 261 blocks might have been able to use either mechanical and solid lifters but they still came from the factory with mechanical lifters.

1955-1957 passenger, hyd. or mech. cam also used the 3837004 block.
