My 1973 1 1/2 ton dump bed looses all the fluid in the master cylinder, it happens every couple of months and I cant find it leaking. I will say the master cylinder is rusty on the outside, but no signs of leaking and the brakes work great. I have looked at each wheel and in the cab as well as under the hood. The truck sits most of the time. I think it is either evaporating or leaking threw the walls on the master cylinder. One more thing where can I find a new master cylinder? It is a single bowl reservoir cylinder.

It's very unlikely for a truck that size to have manual brakes. The booster is not on the firewall, it should be under the cab behind the left running board step. Like 51 ashton said, that's likely where your fluid is going. They don't like staying parked alot, the piston gets corroded and they leak internally.

I have the same issue on my 46. Will I need to replace the booster or can they be repaired? Best place to get parts?

Thanks!

does it spew pretty cloud of blue smoke when you pump the brakes while its running? if so thats brake fluid being burnt. you can find part and a new unit here http://www.abspowerbrake.com/index.html
i bought repair kits from them. not long ago i was quoted 250. for a new unit.

Before you start spending money try this. Fill it up and go out about every 4or 5 days and pump the brakes a time or two. If this stops the leaking it is seeping past the cups in the cyls. If this is the case do not hone and rebuild, replace with new cyls.

just had my hydrovac rebuilt ('58 c-60 viking 2 ton) by Ron at Karps Power Brakes in Ca. He was highly recommended by another bolter and I see why. The guy's prompt, honest, reasonable, and does excellent work. I also recently sent him my master cylinder to be re-sleeved with stainless. for the same truck.
