I know the clamshell/ CE tail light has been discussed before but need to know if there was a version that had the lens without a chrome piece? I have one for my burb and the lens was busted a bit and did not have the chrome piece with the two screws to hold it on.

can't imagine how the lense could NOT be broken without the bezel to protect it

Ok, thats what I thought. I will have to look at mine again, I may be missing or have the incorrect bezel. I have the correct base and license bracket but will have to look again at the bezel.

One more question. I remember the earlier post about what other vehicles you can fine these stop lights on (CE, Wagons, etc.) but is there anything special about just the light housing itself that attaches the the base that pivots? Or can the light housing be from a diff Chevy truck like a '54?Thanks

you know,,,, the clam light on mine when i bought it was also jus a plastic lens without a trim ring. it was broke in half but the lens slipped over the metal bucket part. i never found a replacement lens for it.

1947-1955 Advance-Design Chevrolet and New Design GMC Suburbans & Canopy Express with end-gates used the same tail-lamp assembly. It looks like the same assembly was used by the 49-52 Chevrolet station wagon.

There is one on ebay for sale as we speak. Why did the clam shell tail light hinge ? I'm not familiar with them.

The clamshell taillight has the hinge/drop down action so that when the tail gate is dropped down, the light and license plate is still visible to the rear.

For those who have never seem the 47-55 end-gate tail lamp, here is a photo compliments of MT in AZ.

Mine must be a compilation of parts. I have the correct base and all that but my lens(the broken one) is same diameter as the pictured ones but its about 2 inches deep and seems to just push/snap into the base/housing, which if I remeber correctly was a rubber or hard plastic????I better keep an eye on the ebay housing.

Went to check on the tail light today and the outer light housing say DO RAY LAMP CO Chicago on it, guess that's not original,at least the base is.

all the originals I've seen are Guide R13

What's a complete clamshell tail light with actuating rod worth?I found one for my burb so I have the corect light but don't want to over pay.Thanks

It is worth what you will pay for it and what the seller will let it go for if the two agree. Supply and demand sets prices for original truck parts. They are usually more expensive than the Chinese junk because they are worth more.

Same as 1940-52 Wagon. Not the same as Pontiac.
If you go looking for original used or NOS ones, this should help (I ended up with 5-6 NOS ones a couple of years ago, by searching odd combinations of keywords in ebay).

#1=The orig. Gm part # for the lens was:
919044

#2=The lens/chrome ring/gasket was a unit sold together, under a separate part #:
914084

#3=There is a reproduction of the lens, too.
Kind of hard to find, though.
I think Chevsofthe40s has (or did have) them.

#4=They also used to have a repro. lens AND ring unit. But the ring was black. Never understood why.
Could be chromed, if you got one I am sure.

Howdy...again. I recently sold a complete NOS Guide R13 housing / bezel / red glass light, etc for a touch under $400, still in the original GM box...but how often do you find these? The black primer didn't have a single scratch on it; the cork gasket was flawless; the red glass was perfect, and the chrome bezel was spotless. I have a couple more pieces for the burbs I'm saving that are NOS, but are only the chrome bezel / cork / red glass.
