How difficult is it? The old trans has some chipped teeth and I have a good three speed trans that should fit. I plan to install the trans on my 62 1/2 ton chevy truck. Thanks for any ideas.

The other thing you could do is swap over the internals to the overdrive case. It shouldn't be too hard.

The swap shouldn't be to difficult. If you are wanting to combine the OD unit to the three speed it is another matter. Both tranny's will need to be the same breed and as 4ontheFloor stated, the case on the 3 speed will need some modification to be done to it. Tom | | |

The overdrive variant uses a different casting for the housing, as well as a different mainshaft. You can swap some parts, such as the countershaft, 1rst/reverse slider, bearings in the main case, and seals. If you are wanting to just install a non-o/d trans, as long as the length and spline counts are the same, it will be like a standard trans install. You will need to remove the o/d control hardware. How bad are the gears in the o/d? The gears for the main trans are available through several sources, as the are the same as non-o/d. The aren't very hard to work on either.

The OD unit is the same length as the long tail housing standard trans. All the internal gears are the same and connect to the OD mainshaft. If you have to replace the case you will need to drill a hole for the shift rail. Also you will have to reposition the rear end of the countershaft to fit the OD housing. If the OD trans was not previously installed in your 62 you may have to shorten the driveshaft as the 62 probably had a short tail housing. Fred

Yes the trans is a muncie with the long tail trans so it slips right in without having to shorten the drive shaft. It has two or three of the gear teeth chipped a little on the front of several of the gears. I dont want to install it if is going to be noisy. Maybe my best route would be to replace the gears. The overdrive I have in the truck now works ok except it tends to jump out of high overdrive as I go up hills. I am trying to install a spring on the ouyside shifting arm but getting the tension just right has eluded me so far. It difficult finding anyone to work on these trans so if anyone knows a mechanic near Tyler TX please let me know.

Of course that requires tear down of the trans. Good syncros are becomming hard to find. Worn U-joints and/or driveshaft center bearing can also cause a vibration which will cause it to jump out of gear. Fred
