49 model 3100 panel truck came back from the paint shop and the hood fits poorly. The rear edge does not fit tight to the cowling on the top, it sits up about a half inch across it width. Further, the front where it meets the fenders it seems to narrow and sits up higher than the fenders. Does anyone know to correct these two conditions? Thanks for your help.

God bless,

Dave

I'm curious, how did it fit before going to the bodyshop? 2nd what FGT said, check out tech tips. Keep in mind its not just the hood, where is the cab in relation to the frame, fenders, inner aprons, radiator supt, and the supt rods. There is lots of adjustment built into these old trucks, and with lots of work it will come together. Once you get the hood to fit the cowl/cab, then work out from there. I was surprised what effect the supt rods made on the fenders/fit.

From your description, I THINK I know the answer, and you'll probably say I'm crazy as a bed bug, but bear with me, Since I don't know the history of your truck, I have to assume that its in average condition for a 60 year old truck. The spiral wound springs on the supports that hold the hood in the "open" position have a tendency to rub the windings together, and bind when the hood is lowered, thus holding the rear portion of the hood up slightly. Anyone selling the hinges and supports would tell you to replace, and that would probably be best! However, if you can work some grease into the springs between the windings on the area where they are rubbing together, it should let the springs work more freely and let the hood go down at the back. You may have to spend some time woring thed grease in before you get good results.
