Is there enough room to get close to the ball if I remove the floor starter? Trying to paint it through the little hole in the housing is a challenge. Just wondering if anyone else has a good method for doing this.

Enough to paint yor timing ball and even the other marks

There was plenty of room. If it's too crowded on the starter side there's a twin opening on the opposite side (at least there is on my 216).
