I have a 1955 Second Series that had a leaking rear end. The PO must have run it for an extended period with little or no oil-the gears were worn out and howling. I removed this rear end and replaced it with a 3.08 out of a 85 Camaro. The swap was fairly smooth with no major problems except the driveshaft. The Camaro rear end is "shorter". I had to pull the yoke out of the transmission about 1 inch. It was in the transmission about 2 and a half inches before, so now I have about 1 and a half inches of the yoke on the splines. What do you think, is this a problem waiting to happen? If so, is there another longer driveshaft that will interchange? By the way, the trans is a later model all syncro of unknown year.

the trans will be 66~88, pretty much the same - for the slip yoke, likely won't be a problem as long as you're a sane driver - one check you can do is to jack up the back of the truck so the axle is hanging and see how much more it comes out of the trans, I wouldn't want much less than the inch and a half
