For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 4 | Hi all, I am looking at a 1951 Chevy 6400. Listed for $1250. I went out and looked at it yesterday to see what sort of condition it is in. The truck seems to be complete. Everything seems to be there. No brakes. Engine is free but I didn't hear it run. Tires are bad. Split rims. Rotting wood for the bed. Windows are cracked and broken. Not too many dents in it. One large crease in the front of the cab, in the fins on the passenger's side. Some rust but no rot. Owner has title in hand. Please let me know what you think this truck is worth in its present condition. In that condition they sell for less than half that price in Nebraska.
Would you be interested in a '42? It runs, drives, stops, and dumps. Send me a PM if interested.

I think its overpriced. And it will cost big bucks to get it going. There are no repop parts available for the bigger trucks. I would start out with one in better shape. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | Agreed, I buy big trucks just for parts in better conditon I have never payed more than $400 for a complete 47-54 2-tonner. For example this is my latest purchase as stated $400 for the whole thing, comes with a title from the original owners! Keep looking and make sure bigger is better for you. There is a great atrticle in the Tech Tips on living with a big truck and the potential up's and down's! http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2139999190102454676fHdLum | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 48 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 48 | Between brakes and tires this truck will eat 2000 bucks in a heartbeat. And that is if you do all the labor, and that assumes the engine will run. The truck is really worth about half what he is asking. But.....you have to factor in amount of rust and traveling distance. Brakes are easy, rust is not so easy. I bought my running and driving '49 for $1000 dollars. A great deal right? Yes and no. I live in Tulsa and the truck was basically in South Dakota. So I drove up with tools to get it. It took three days to get it home at 40 mph. I spent nearly seven hundred dollars in gas, hotels, and paying my guy a hundred bucks a day to follow my "slow boat to China." It was an adventure to say the least. And I might add it was a MIRACLE the truck did not break down once. I doubt I would be so lucky again. I would have to say that distance from home has to be a huge consideration when buying one of these monsters. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 474 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 474 | I just bought my 1953 1.5 ton running last friday from mason ,Tx not to far from you for $500.00 .Looks like the one you are looking at is in need of a lot of work . Good luck | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 4 | Did they have any others I'm considering this one. He has lowered the price. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 720 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 720 | I try not to think about how much I spent on 'Tater,... But I'll say that I paid $2K, plus $1100 for new rubber, and a couple hundred for the tow truck just to get it home. And that was for a running, semi-drivable, yet fully functional dump truck.
It's not so much about what everyone else says it's worth, coz things cost different amounts depending on where you are (everything costs too durned much here!), but what is it worth to YOU. 1956 GMC 370 dump " 'Tater "1970 VW Volksrod "the Black Bomber" 2007 Chevy Avalanche 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, 2005 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things. But thats just MY opinion! :P
