I have a glass bowl fuel pump I bought from Chevy Duty last year. Just now able to get everything else done to try and crank. I'm getting gas to the fuel pump bowl, but no fuel out the other side going up to carb.

Any ideas other than possibly a defective pump? I know it's pulling fuel to the pump because I emptied glass bowl. Truck turns over and bowl fills back up with fuel.

Thanks!

Are you not getting gas at the carb or no gas at the outlet side of the pump. IF you are only checking at the inlet side of the carb, pull the line at the outlet side of the pump and turn the engine over. If you get gas there when turning the engine over you have a plugged gas line between the pump and carb. If you don't get gas at the outlet side of the pump with no line connected you have a bad pump. The other alternative would be no gas to the pump but if your bowl fills that shouldn't be the problem.

I did pull the line at the outlet on the pump. No gas is coming out of the outlet of the pump. I do have gas in the glass bowl so I know I'm getting fuel to the pump. Is it possible to have it mounted upside down and it still pull fuel into the glass bowl?

My glass bowl is on top.

I think the glass bowl should be on the bottom. Just a guess from seeing others.

magnmike,

I did a search and some folks say bowl down, and some say up! The pumps I remember went with the glass bowl down, this is where the gunk always collected.

Under the gasket that was mashed between the housing and bowl was a fine mesh screen...and this went up!

I thought the gasket mimicked the the shape of the pump housing AND a cast raised piece on the block.

The pump will only function with the lever in contact with the cam lobe, and this means it will only fit the RIGHT way.

You can feel the cam lobe with your finger and it will be up..or it will be down, and the lever will fit accordingly.

While the pump is out, and you give it a squeeze, it will reveal itself to you! It sucks on one side and pushes on the other.

I would think the last thing on my list would be any thought it was defective...it does happen, but not as often as the other snafu's.

Thanks everyone. Stuart, I believe I'll take the pump off and test the suction and feel for the cam lever to be sure. Now that I've thought about it, I am sure I put this pump in with the lever pointing up which was the same as the orignal (non-glass bowl type). I would also think it wouldn't pull the gas into the bowl if it was inserted the wrong direction. That's why I'm leaning towards it being defective as it is 1/2 doing it's job!!

If it is found to be failing to blow air out ont he outlet side, I'm going to try the $20 NAPA version as a test.

Glass bowl is up on 1954 235/261 engines. I will check photos on 1949/50 engines on Friday, if someone does not post 216 information by then.

magnmike,

I am pretty sure it goes with the lever up too. I just looked at a old Chevrolet book and it
shows the glass bowl pointing up...who knows!

It wouldn't hurt to fill a small bucket with water and submerge the pump. While it is underwater, pump the lever and it should shoot a very good stream...out of the discharge hole. Good luck.

tcledermen,
I have a 1951 3100 truck with a 235 engine. I believe the engine is a 54 or 56. Thanks for the pic!

Ok guys...Good news is that I had the pump in correct. Dumb news.... after buying another fuel pump today, I realized it still wasn't pulling enough gas. My father-in-law said, "Sure you got gas in the tank?" frown
Well, sure enough there wasn't much. Amazing what a full tank will do. After 1 year of off and on work to get her going, she cranked up beautifully today!!! Even though I felt like a dope today, I also feel great because I've been doing the work myself to get her running.

You guys have been a big help along the way as I've encountered setbacks with various items.

Thanks for the help. Look for me to continue asking for advice.

Thank you for the update. You are certainly not the first to forget the fuel level on an ongoing project. Congratulations.
