I am confused at the ratings for GMC's. I think a 350 is a 1 and 1/2ton truck but on the 450's I have seen them rating from 2 ton to 3 ton. Is a ss # 453-30 Z2786 with gross wt at 19,500 a 2 ton or 3 ton. Spanky has a COE 450 which is a 3 ton?

It has a master cylinder that has a Wagner FE 3419. I have seen in some catalogues a new one for a 2 ton and larger. They also are called "Utility" truck It is a large MC compared to a pickup. What does the "Utility" designation mean?

With gross wt. at 19,500 it would be five ton or maybe six ton. subtract the weight of the vehicle and divide by 2000. Is that number on the data plate from the factory or just painted on the side of the truck somewhere?

I have been in the trucking business since 1963 and I am still confused. GMC called a 350 a 2 ton and a 450 a 3 ton. The trucks I run today have a gross vehicle weight of 52,000 and a gross combination weight of 80,000 and an empty weight of 14,000, but they are registered as 5 ton. When you get into larger trucks. the tonnage is just a nominal rating that means nothing.

280 is a ton and a quarter.
300 is a ton and a half.
350 is a 2-ton.
450 is a 3-ton.

It goes higher and I believe there are models like a 400 that fit in the middle...

If you still have the original motor its a 302 judging by the serial number.

Thank you.

It is obvious now that I see the models broken down. My hang up was that I thought the 350 was a ton and a half.
