hi guys, I am new to the site and see you seem to be the pros.first is there a way to post pics? I have a 1950 that has a radio no one can seem to identify.I have some pics of it. If anyone can give me any info i greatly appreciate it. it is a philco model 931 it is an all in one unit with manual tuning.it is AM only. I also have a firestone radio that is basically identical to the philco.thanks

Looks like an aftermarket radio. I really like the looks of it though. Nice dial and all.

It looks like it would attach under the dash, correct. I will look through my books to see if I have the circuit diagram. Is there a prefex to the model nuber like "50-931" ?

Thanks I will have to look again, but I don't think so. It does attach under the dash.

So I posted on antique radio. I got a response that they are universal fit. I was also told they are likely from they 40s. Just curious I thought I seen a bill somebody on this site who rebuilds old radios. Can u guys tell me who rebuilds them, thanks

This Philco came out about 1940, used loctal type tubes, the Firestone may also been built by Philco ,I've also seen a Slivertone[Sears} like this . I've owned and worked on many of these radios , I think I can come up with a 1940 or 41 ad for this radio, I'm restoring a 920 Philco , I have an original display avertising sign ,witch uses an actual working radio !,It is from 1939, is a mock up of a late 30's auto dash my 920 sold originally for $24.95, I think your 931 sold for $19.95? I'll check on it.

wow that is alot of help. sorry to be you, cause i have all kinds of questions now. Of course i have to be like everyone else. Are they worth anything? Do you work on them for other people? I am interested in seeing the ad. Do you know of anyone who has parts for the philco like the face and knobs? you wouldn't believe how many hoops i jumped through to find info on this.

Value? are they worth anything? ,The ones I sold where priced at restoration cost, other wise the radio is free ,just pay for my time, I have done other ones for people, including JIM CARTER , the big problem is they are after market not OME, but just as when they where new they still have that part of the market, They are what I call Jalopy radios they are geared and priced to the kid working after school,who wants a radio for his Model A Witch because of the design of this radio and the design of the Model A dash work good to gather. most of these I've done have gone into model A's
I know of no reproduction parts like dial and knobs being made for these radios , sometimes you just have to look for something , I do, how ever, should come up with everything to get it working .

ok thanks, thats alot of food for thought. makes me question if i should keep them or throw them in the garbage. The one with no face plate or knobs i want to see if i can maybe find some parts for it and if i can, i will definatly send your way. thanks again for all the info and help.

I think that you would find that radio a good fit for models like the 46 truck. Just because it might not bring a lot of money doesn't mean it is junk.

I did a little reseach on the 931, the ad I have is 1941 and the model is the R 10 ,newer model, your 931 is a 1940 model and has, I believe, the older type antenna conection.

As far as value, if we all worried about that most of this stuff would end up in the garbage, to me that's where the modern stuff belongs, These old radio can be made to work now and another 70 years from now!

I know most people ask about value because they think wow i can get a ton of money for this thing.I am asking because i don't want to throw a 500 dollar radio in the garbage. this is where my dalema is.first I keep hearing how hard it is to find knobs and faces.second i don't know if the radios work and before i hook them up and make things worse i want them gone threw. No one knows how expensive this is untill they look at them (understandable).I am probably wrong but my way of thinking is that most people are in agreement, that these are common radios and not worth much to anyone because they are not oringinals.so my thought is telling me wrather then paying for shipping and parts and service labor. to apply that money twords a new radio.The other thought i am having is to keep the firestone because it looks nice mount it under the dash where it came from and be happy. I don't listen to AM anyways. I will gladly take advice

If everybody that has one throws it into the garbage, then it will be worth something, as there won't be many around.


That would look good in a Model A Bill.

"Parts" radios perform the same function as parts trucks. I have a couple of shelves full of them and every once in a while I will need s part that cannot be bought new.

If you decide to get rid of either one, maybe a Stovebolter near you would be glad to take it off your hands.
