Mine stalk has to be exactly centered for the brake lights to work. The post fits in the switch as it should. The mechanical part seems to be working fine. The electrical part doesn't feel like it has any detents. If its not exactly centered, no brake lights on one side or the other. I think this "new" switch is faulty. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Jul 2001 Posts: 3,887 | the switch itself has no real detents it's just a sliding set of contacts, the mechanics in the cup is what positions it, at 'center' the mechanical parts should 'detent' and the lever shouldn't be able to be either side of that to confuse the switch, in the center/off position, there should be no play, if there is something is worn

If you are talking about a factory type switch that is how it is supposed to work. When pushed down you should get a brake light on the right and a flashing light on the left. It did not mechanically center itself after turning. Not being centered would cause one or the other brake lights to not work. I installed some indicator lights under the dash wired to the brake lights so I could tell when the switch was centerd correctly. Replaced some of the old mechanical switch parts, cleaned and lubed the rest and everythings good now.
