I don't know if this is the correct forum for this (maybe haulin' board or ebay links or parts wanted?), but here goes...

I am trying to find a rear differential from a '55-'59 truck for my project. There is one on ebay with the entire axle, but it's in CA and pickup only.

If I'm the winning bidder, I'm trying to find someone near this location who would be willing to pick up the part and ship the center section to me (St. Augustine, FL). You can keep the rest, free of charge. I will pay for shipping of the center piece, obviously.

Might not be too far out of my way. What are your shipping plans for getting it to the opposite coast?? UPS? A freight company?? Greyhound?

I would think the differential could be packed up in a box and shipped via UPS. I have the perfect box sitting in my garage. I just took my new brakes out of it. But that's not going to help you on the west coast.

Sorry, my thoughts were rudely interrupted by a crying baby on my shoulder. I'm really trying to find one of these differentials and the ad clearly states "pick up only". I don't need the rest of the axle, so I thought if someone out there could use any part of it, I'd be happy to make a deal for a little shipping leg-work.

And this is worth its weight in gold to that one 'bolter looking for one of these.

What does a center section weigh? If it is more than 70# it goes to oversize 1 at UPS. I pack as minimally as possible, but are you prepared to pay the shipping charges?? BTW, I probably won't be able to use the extra parts. As for how well I do shipping, my ebay ID is MNSmith. Last I checked, I have 1924 positives. Bid, we'll get your center section to you. You might have to pitch in $10 to feed my dually. My wife won't let me put that stuff in her Suburban and the axle is on the other side of the county.

Unless anybody else from Los Angeles wants to stand up.

MN, have you ever shipped anything as large as the whole back axle? Any idea what I'd be looking at for shipping cost? If no one out there can use it, I'm sure I could find a use for it out here.

And I'd be happy to chip in some fuel and lunch money for your efforts.

R/G I sold a belly mower about the size and weight of a rear end assy. to a guy in florida, names Jim Osteen [email protected] he had a trucker buddy pick it up for him on a return trip back to Florida. Maybe his buddy will do this for you. Its worth an e-mail. All I know about Jim is that he is a cop in florida.

I've shipped classic Schwinn balloon bikes ( big boxes, 60-70 pounds, UPS, $70-100 ), engines ( 454 cu.in., freight, cost $700 back in 2000 ), plenty of other big, bulky and heavy stuff. Keep in mind, and I don't know why this is, but it cost more to ship out of California than to ship in. Don't believe me? Pick a box size, weight and zip code. Use the UPS calculator to estimate into California then use it to estimate from California. Maybe UPS thinks we are all rich in this state.

The better deal for you would probably be to have the center section go UPS than the whole axle go freight. Disposing what isn't used is no problem for me. I might be able to use the axles, though. I had to do a repair bearing on one of mine and I'd prefer to have a decent axle over a repair bearing.
